These systems only serve to quench our needs.

I never asked for a free market that offered articles of rating the curvatures of Brad Pitt's coin purse, but unfortunately one exists, because there are dregs who want that content.

The answer isn't a different economic system or a whole new way of politics.

The answer is the destruction of the human race.

Probably, but BNSF (aka "Better Not Start Family") is notoriously bad as well. On the east CSX is nobody's friend, can't even get along with its own customers, let alone its employees. NS is at least somewhat sane, not great but looks nice compared to the others. The picture tells a part of it. Then there's other factors like the PSR-driven drawdown in labor force leading to common firings for trivial infractions and almost constant employee shortages (leading in turn to frequent call-ups) with the consequent and expected destruction of worker morale. Recruitment is also poor. Of NS's last 800 conductor hires (this is the best of the bunch, remember), most of them did not get through the first 30 days and they're looking at a net loss when factored against normal attrition (promotions, retirements, etc), making up the difference for now via call-ins and outside contractors but long term that's untenable for reasons which should be presently obvious. Railroading for a class 1 is a tough lifestyle--always has been. Workers used to be able to lay off more or less at-will when necessary which was a big factor in making it more bearable. The regionals and shortlines are not experiencing nearly the same extent of employee issues despite generally lower pay rates...turns out folks like being able to sleep in their own beds.

Long story short, they reaped the near-term benefits of PSR for awhile now the devil's come to collect his due.
