Default Monster Mode!

Check it out, WAY back in the day (I wanna say pre-velious) EQ introduced this new thing on the Test Server (or maybe pvp servers) called "Monster Mode" or some shit, for a VERY short time.

Basically, you could log in, choose "Monster Mode", and drop into a newb area as a moss snake, a rat, orc pawn, etc and go and fight real newbies. You could sit there and jump up and down infront of them, circle them, fight OTHER moss snakes, etc. You couldn't talk, trade, or do ANYTHING. To the naked eye you were simply a moss snake.

There is no point in this thread but to simply recall this wonderful fucking feature that got ousted in like a week.

Lol, I remember when it came out, and me and a few more people controlled monsters on Vallon Zek would hide near the Qeynos gates, and mass jump newbies when they came out far enough to not be able to run back. Good times. You could also level your newbie monster at an extraordinarily slow rate, but I never heard of anyone surviving long enough to do so.

I am fairly certain this didnt happen until after Luclin came out because I quit before Luclin and I remember receiving a promotional e-mail afterwords about this exact thing.

It was removed once they saw level 1s on test being chased around the newb yard by 8 player-controlled gnolls, and realized the griefing that would have ensued on live. Was fun though, yea, for sure.

When we tested this feature it was definitely post-kunark, maybe pre-velious. You could get randomly dropped into a mob in several zones, the highest of which was some kind of lake. Omen something or other.

Anyhow, if you kept at it for a while you'd end up in the body of these wannabe dragon-men that hung out in little fortresses near the lake, some of which had spells. Since caster mobs had the same basic melee stats as anything else it basically made you a super-mob. I'm fairly certain these were the reason it never really got off the ground. If anyone engaged you it was a simple thing to toast the healer or chanter then waste the group.

Hilariously fun while it lasted.

Edit: Lake of Ill Omen
