Why does my gas stove burners have a setting at like 7 when it already burns everything at 3? Would the 7 be for my wok?

Get those flames up the sides of the wok for more hot surface area!

I'm confused why numbers would be on the dials, unless everyone used the same specs for burners. "set your right front burner to 3 for perfect meatsear?"
