Tanik Greskil 4th Shawl

I have a vial of velium vapors, and I've been trying to spawn Tanik in EW in order to get his note for the 4th Coldain prayer shawl. I haven't done the 3rd shawl yet, and all I ever get to spawn are death traps. Do you think it's possible to get Tanik to spawn w/o having done the 3rd shawl?

get a pet and go to the north side of the kael canyon. tell pet to guard if it faces east or west go the direction it is looking if not move away from what ever it faces and try again. In my experience its 50/50 on deathsquad or tanik

That's what I did, too. Just make sure your pet doesn't damage the death squad or you'll get summoned. Use a lower level spell and reclaim him as soon as they spawn.
