I just read this excerpt from some dude named the quon who was a cleric eventually in the luclin / pop era.

I just wanted to reflect on the fact that I don't remember anyone being charm demon psychopaths with enchanters like they are on this server. Not sure if it was just lack of knowledge about the limits of the game mechanics or if charm wasn't so useful.




Enchanter – I suggest that SOE make chanters start out at level 60 with KEI already memmed in their spellbooks. Prior to lvl 60 your only duty is to wear a skirt and look pretty. Even after 60 there is no need for you to be in a group, just cast KEI on us and beat it, go make some earrings or sit in the corner and whine about being useless. Maybe if your nukes had more punch than a snowball in summer I’d let you group with me, or if your pet could find it’s own ass with a map and a ranger tracking for it. No shit, those animations should come with head gear and a Power Ranger backpack. Lastly, If you are a male and playing an enchanter delete that pansie ass toon right now, WTF were you thinking? All the Charisma points in the world won’t make me like these asshats.

Power Ranger backpack

Remember those people who use to play that had power ranger avatars/names lol...

There was a time they weren't OP anymore. If you wanted to Charm in PoP you had to have the AA dire charm and it still wasnt all that cause mobs had too much HP and other classes smashed their DPS. Paladin's even had better DPS lol. Yeah enchanters became more of a support class in those eras. Definitely in PoP.

They get OP again later when max levels become like 90+ lol but classic/velious chanters are strong

I can't comment for everyone's experience, but I played an enchanter on live from mid-Kunark to early GoD.

Kunark - Harder than P99 because gear was more expensive / less available, went 1-60 during this era.

Velious - Very similar to P99, groups with pets in Kael were very popular, got epic / Thurg geared

Luclin - This is probably the era of your comment, lots of enchanter abilities didn't work in entire zones, KEI was expensive (100k) *and* made you feel worthless. This is the era that pushed me into raiding and I hated my class.

PoP - Charm was stronger than ever, but you need competent groups and / or lots of defensive AAs.

LoY - Not a real expansion.

LDoN - Mez, charm and lull made the class even more valuable (and stressful).

GoD - See LDoN. Also, I had a WoW beta.

I played on live and dont recall anyone charming very much at all. Almost everyone had TERRIBLE gear, I'm talking cat eye bracers well into your 50s. So when the pet turned on you, it was nearly instant death. Also the healers would be too slow or OOM to save you often. Enchanters were mainly just mez and clarity bots in dungeons.

There’s some crazy charm shenanigans possible during PoP... if you went straight to dire charm then you’re missing the boat. Dire charm is like, if you want to be lazy

My understanding is that enchanter peaked in PoP in terms of it's #1 solo class title. After holding that title since classic.
