Replace the brownshirt thug in your cartoon with an extremist muslim and you wind up with a right-leaning fear piece instead of a left-leaning fear piece. Both sides seem to agree that liberal democracy is potentially vulnerable to those who would participate in it only long enough to gain control then destroy it, even if they disagree on the nature of their enemies. No-one seems to offer a good solution to that problem though. De facto consensus seems to be the solutions (usually some form of government speech and participation control) would ultimately prove more damaging than the original risk.

I regard his distancing himself from that term (particularly post-WW2) as mostly a matter of political expediency.
