Focus items are the best thing you can give a think mage.
Something that will always be a big help is a bag full of wooly silk spider nets since you don't have the ability to cast root on your own

Consumables/clickies (sow pots, invis rings, calimonies, wool nets) ->Focus items -> int to 200ish -> raw mana/HP
the velious quest gear can be clicked at level 1 and offer a significant advantage
