Expected behavior. Ctrl + Alt + Del brings up the "secure desktop" (you can disable this via local security policy, but it's a security feature) and the changing display modes makes EQ sad. Can try using windowed mode and a low resolution like 800x600, or just don't lock your system with the game running.

2020-08-24 17:13:04 CRender::ResetDevice: Reset failed. it happened again.... I don't think my operating system is getting along with EQ.. I am running Windows 7 What's the most compatible Operating System in the entire world for EverQuest P1999? I am running OS: - Name: Microsoft Windows 7 Professional - Version: 6.1.7601 Service Pack 1 Build 7601

I have run this just fine for years on my old Win8.1 Pro box with some meh card liek the GTX 760, the key for P1999 is to run the game in 'compatibility mode' as WinXP SP3. I enjoy running in windowed mode and then setting up ZlizEQMaps, makes the exploring so much better.

Played on XP, 7 (64 bit) and 10. What Grim said about compatibility mode is important for crashing when zoning / camping. But, if you're triggering secure desktop by doing a ctrl-alt-del you're almost always going to crash as the client really doesn't like it when resolutions change. Why are you locking your computer with EQ running anyway?

Additionally, there's a custom direct3d dll you can try. It's mostly for getting P99 to recognize and work with newer graphics cards; otherwise it tends to only use integrated graphics. Might be worth a shot:
http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2.html Note this this will trigger an alert about an unsafe site. I haven't noticed any deleterious effects from using it for P99 though (it's some files you copy into your EQ directory). Read the readme as you'll probably want to edit the ini to disable the watermark thing it does in the corner. -Mcoy

Forgot to mention, I am using "WinEQ 2.15 Lite" -- it seems to be better for playing in Windowed mode I will give that direct3d dll thing a shot and i'll try 'compatibility mode' as WinXP SP3
