How do you MQ?

I have various pieces for an epic turn in and was wondering how to MQ it. Never done this before and was looking for an explanation.

Let's say items A, B, C, and D are required for a quest. Your alt turns in items A, B, and D, for instance; and then you turn in item C on your main and receive the reward.

In other words, if an NPC is given all but one of the required items, whatever character turns in the final item gets the reward. It doesn't matter which item it is as long as it's the final turn-in. However, you have to really think it through. Which character will do any sub-quests there may be?
