I didn't see necro mentioned until now. As a necro you can invis and invis undead. You are pretty safe almost everywhere since you have that nice feign death spell. Necro is one of the top soloing classes and can work very nice in a group as well.
Enchanter is a power house of course, but as a newbie you will die sooo often, probably hating the game pretty soon. Enchanter is a pro class, wouldn't recommend for a starter. Druid is pretty nice as well. While you are not as safe as a necro and lack invis to undead, traveling is way easier and faster. And druids can solo just fine.

Enchanter is an amazing class for all the reasons listed here already. You don't have the ports/sow that a druid would have but all that means is that instead of going to guk one day and then unrest the next day, and then solA the next day you simply stay in guk for a week and explore it hard! Go into every crevice while you crawl. You can do this solo once you learn more and more about the class and chances are you will get invites to groups without even advertising that you are LFG because enchanters are so great to have in groups, especially after lvl 16 as that is when they get their first clarity and haste spells.
Check these guides out - amazing work by these two. Loraen's Guide and Xornn's Guide. These two guides combined with trying out these strategies will get you to be a competent chanter in groups and a good soloer using charm. Enchanter is a class that can help you achieve all your adventuring goals, and if those goals happen to change down the road it is (imo) the most powerful and fun class to play in this game. You will not regret it. I prefer high elf for their starting stats and starting area but there really is no wrong race choice (except human, who plays a human in a high fantasy rpg? I mean, c'mon). Behold the epicness that is the Enchanter.

As for race selection, a chanter gets illusions to pretend to be other races/creatures - this is great for shopping/questing in hostile towns, RPing and racial bonuses (for example improved vision for gnome or levitation for air elemental).

Ough no - agnostic is so blend, pick a fight man! Enchanter can still shop/vendor in most places with whatever religion they have. With illusion and alliance you can get through. If you lose a few cities no big deal. Being agnostic is lame, there is so much more and flavor with the EQ pantheon [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.] pick one you like and include it in your RP! Human Enchanter of Bertoxxulous coming from the Qeynos Sewers is my suggestion!

Enchanter is probably the only class I don't mind I don't being agnostic on. It's RP compatible. You are the master of the mind tricks, you know better than blindly believing in some deity which maybe isn't even there.

If I were you I would first look to the Druid class. While Enchanter has most everything going for it, you will unlock things that allow you to really see the world at an earlier stage on a Druid. It's also not a bad first character because even leveling a Druid into the 30s will give you a means of funding future endeavors [by way of ports.] So, I'd say:
1) Druid. Snare at level 1. Root at level 5. SoW [speed buff] at 14. Self ports at 19. Etc. 2) Bard. Selo's [run speed song] at level 5. Invis by early 20s? Also just read up and see what roles sound appealing to you over the duration of your time in Norrath.

Ranger or necro is the way to go.
