The schools I go into every day at work don’t seem all that underfunded or bad. This seems off

I realize the Zapatistas and such of this world would roll the hell out of their eyes at me, but I don't live there, I live here.

I'm not under any illusions that capitalism has created plenty for a hell of a lot more people than previous systems did. Pulling people out of poverty is good. I'm not advocating for Maoism or Stalinism, there's no reason we can't just continue to pick the good features of a given system and graft it into our own - just like we have always done.

The Earth is giving us signs that we are being too destructive. There's an ongoing mass extinction caused by the actions of human beings. We can ignore them, but nature doesn't need our attention or approval to do her thing.

Don't let the nature of the internet make me come off as a psycho. I would prefer nobody dies, but the need to keep t-shirts cheap seems to be killing an awful lot of people. Those immigrants 'coming from nothing' - what caused the nothing they fled?

Well it's probably not ALL bad and people are generally pretty clever, we'll see what happens. Even if there isn't a forthcoming climate apocalypse of some kind, there's still a hell of a lot of evil stuff done to keep t-shirts cheap. I have a mix of optimism and pessimism about the future. Take what you know about my personal life and shrug accordingly, if you want.
Those immigrants coming from nothing would be dead if not for modern medicine and agricultural engineering, it isn’t gross oppression, it’s more people surviving to adulthood than ever before and other places political situations not advancing as fast as medicine

Take Iran, for instance. Iran absolutely got fucked over by the US, probably more so than anyone. Technology has unfortunately made it more possible than ever to maintain a surveillance state. I’m not optimistic that Iran ever becomes free

But my family has fled to Armenia and while I have not been there a lot, my wife and daughter have in the course of seeing my family get settled. Anyway, you’d be amazed to see the progress that has been made as the country has gone from patronage to valuing rule of law and individual rights

I’d elaborate, but I’m not an expert on Armenia, I just know that despite being dirt poor, it’s noteworthy that large numbers of people are fleeing Iran and Russia for Yerevan. I would also remind you that while our market system and government tends to take the things bankers say at face value, we can absolutely create rule of law and free markets without accepting nonsense from the people least integral to our economic success.

I literally owe my life to modern medicine. I had a head injury about a dozen years ago that would have killed me if I had been born ~100 years earlier. Don't even get me started on the various drugs and therapies related to cancer.

I probably come off as pessimistic because I am critical of capitalism, but the fact that I have massive advantages compared to both existing people and long-dead ones is not lost on me.

It's the internet, it's mostly used to complain. I learned in church the other day about 'toxic positivity' and boy oh boy did that one hit me in the stomach.

I don't know about you guys, but having to wait until the second coming of Christ to start implementing more socialist policies in this country sounds like a real bummer.
