Seems like all the shutdowns and postponements of the municipal fireworks displays resulted in people taking matters into their own hands: Many folks in the little town I live in shot off large quantities of fair-size aerial rockets, so many that (combined with a more or less wind-less evening) the distinct smell of burnt gunpowder lingered in the air for quite some time. Naturally my household added to it, as is Right and Proper. It reminded me of July 4th holidays from my youth, before nanny state laws took over here in Ohio. No sitting for an hour in traffic, either. I'm glad the daughter got the chance to see how July4 is supposed to be.

With a hot afternoon and a liberal supply of well-dried charcoal the grilling came out excellent as well.

Jimjam: I've long found it interesting that the Battle of the Chesapeake was about the only major naval battle the Royal Navy lost during the height of the Age of Sail. Coupled with a couple other equally-unlikely scenarios that unfolded in the patriot's favor it's I think fair to say fate seems to have ordained that the U.S. was meant to exist.

I think even if the Revolution had been crushed it would still have been hard to govern from so far away. I don't think the Americans of the day would have opted for British colony status (as in Australia etc).

Happy tax evasion day to all those across the pond! A great day for liberty!

A moment's reverence to those that gave their lives for freedom, especially for France's contribution of men, ships, weapons and wealth to bring liberty to a foreign nation under oppression.

France assisting the independence of America is the smoking gun for the beginning of the end of the Imperial Age: not only bringing about the modern state of USA, but also triggering France's own turn against tyranny in their own country and consequently all of Europe. Sure it was a rocky road, with a lot of backward steps, but the world has overall made a forward progression for which we should all be thankful.
