EQ is one of those games that rewards you exponentially the more time you dedicate in a given play period. Its not a game you can pick up for 30 mins to an hour at a time (I mean you can, but its not nearly as effective as sinking 6 hours into a session).

Its kind of like fishing - it takes time to get set up, boat in the water, park the truck, tie the lure etc etc. It just doesnt make sense to go fishing for an hour on a boat. You need to dedicate atleast half a day for it to be worth your while.

For instance, if you are playing toon that requires a group, it could easily take 30 mins to find a group, and thats if you can find a group at your particular level.

On the extreme end, players that are willing to repeatedly dedicate 10+ hours of play time in a given session will reap the highest rewards. 10 hours 1 time is far for effective than 1 hour 10 times.

So with all that said, classic EQ is not a real life friendly game. Hence games like WOW gained more purchase with casuals due to the QOL features.

No, I get it, its more responsible but it doesn't make good games. You know what it is? its the Dwayne Johnson formula. Responsible, bankable but you forget his movie 5 minutes after leaving the theater.

I don't know that it has to be one or the other. I liked Air Warrior a lot better than I've ever liked Everquest, and the former game could easily be played in sub-hour sessions. It was a different kind of game, though. World simulator games like EQ tend to take time and its hard to get around that without damaging the fundamentals that make those types of games what they are in the first place. At most you can mitigate it with some pre-planning; you can do those hour sessions in EQ if you're camped out someplace uncontested and hence able to log in and out freely as desired.

Ya I agree with Topgun but also with this that it can be somewhat mitigated. For me, I picked a class that can solo knowing I wouldn’t be able to devote the time to finding groups before having to log. Sometimes when I know I only have an hour to play, I’ll devote that time to running to an exp or farming spot just to park at and log out. Then if it’s a popular spot, I won’t even even bother to log back on at primetime, I’ll try at like 1am on a Saturday to farm solo for like an hour before I go to bed. On Green this is usually the only chance for the popular spots to be open. The problem with choosing this time is that I start getting pretty tired, my contacts start getting glued to my eyeballs because I’ve worn them for 12+ hours at that point, and playing on an enchanter while tired can be risky sometimes. Also if I get really bad RNG streaks I get pissed about that and fired up which then makes it hard to sleep after lol
