Game Enhancement Questions
by Chris - 04/13/00 06:31 EST
Some good questions and answers about some enhancements for EQ
>>>When you target and NPC and hit 'h', you say 'Hail Whoever'. Why can this not also be so when hailing players?
That's always bugged me too. I'll ask the guys about it tomorrow. Thanks for reminding me
>>>More communication of what's going on to those around you, or at least in your group. I'd like my casters to be able to see me taunting away, and I'd like to see the damage they're doing or not doing with their spells. This would promote trust within the group I'd think
We like the idea that people learn to trust that those in their group will do their jobs (such as a warrior taunting), but we also have a technological bias here. Any time we broadcast a message to everyone in a group, that uses bandwidth. Though the amount of bandwidth in use might seem inconsequential, when we take a very frequent occurance like taunting, and multiply it by 50K+ people online at one time, it *really* adds up.
The group loot messages, which is the last thing we added a group broadcast for, occur far less frequently than something like a taunt would, definitely uses a good chunk of bandwidth.
>>>A kind of "/who all zone" command, that would either list, or at least give a count of the players in a specific zone (without one being in that zone). In an overcrowded environment, it would save casual players a great deal of time if they could look to find a less-used zone to hunt in without having to travel to it first.
We're still looking into the possibility of this. We like the idea and think it would enhance gameplay for those that choose to find greener pastures.
>>>Be able to buy large quantity items without having to click my mouse button 40 times. A slider bar is good
Good idea. I know we have this on the wish-list, but no definite short-term plans for it.
>>>An option that allows other players inspecting you to see the stats of the equipment you're wearing.
This probably won't happen. I think that it opens a nice avenue for communication. It also gives people the option of keeping the stats on an item secret.
>>>When SOW, invisible, etc wears off the text should be flashing in multiple colors. A lot better than the hard-to-see blue text
We're still looking into options to help out in these cases, and also in the cases where people are color-blind. I'm blue-black colorblind myself.

/who all >zone<
by Chris - 06/21/00 01:10 EST
We will not being seeing a command to see who is in a zone at all (it was hinted a while ago that players might). It's a shame really that we aren't.
This functionality already exists for those who are GM flagged, however due to bandwidth and server load issues, we've decided not to open it up to the playerbase at large. This command has to query the server of the requested zone in order to return the list.
Dozens of people on each server executing the command at the same time would presents the concerns mentioned above.

There is one post, later but within the classic timeline, that indicates the command was eventually made usable to players and then other post that suggests it was not, at least for planar zones.

My new rule of thumb is to do a '/who all Oasis' and multiply by 100.
I'm on Drinal as well, and it shows up mid-list for me.

Summit Clarification: Small Guilds
Actually, the numbers changed, Aldrin, but the way it works is the same. Both guilds use a booking each for the same raid.
I'm wondering about the logistics nightmare of keeping track of who currently needs what epic piece from what plane at what time?
And, I guess we're the weirdos. Our epic loot rules are the same as regular loot rules. If you are on the raid, and you need it, you random with everyone else who can. We don't do set-asides. Oddly, many of our guests talk it over privately. I'm reminded of three rogues in Hate with us who decided amongst themselves who was most "needy". The other two passed on the random. In our eyes, that makes all three people more "epic" than some twinkling doodad VI cooked up. THAT is "uber".
We can do the 18 to book requirement, barely. We can also do the 12 up there requirement, IF it's a good night for all our folks. That will be our crapshoot nowadays. But, then again, if no enchanters show up, and none are available, I declare it FFA too. We will have less raids then we did. We will have to work harder to keep them. But, our lives in Norrath don't revolve around a plane, an epic piece of garbage, or a game.
Will some cheat? Were some cheating before? To say it wasn't proven doesn't prove it wasn't happening. Actually, Aldrin mentioned on our Hate raid that a "/who Plane of Hate all" would be a good thing, good idea. But, realize there is no enforcement possible. Verant doesn't give a rat's patoot. It's all about honor, and we can only hope karma applies.
The Ridgerunners will honor this Summit as we have all of them. We don't accept WE WANT IT AND WE WANT IT NOW as a valid option for us. We don't accept "Others cheat so we can" as a valid option for us. That's for others to do.

Re: Summit Clarification: Small Guilds
And for anyone that cares, but not enough to read it in context, here is what you (Aldrin) contributed to the meeting.
...
it's a shame you can't do a /who all Hate or /who all Fear
second
FFA
what if they're anon?
why not?
no, why not anon in hate?
nevertheless life would be easier if you could /who all zone to see who was in a particular zone
but I digress
If the tie can't be broken, change my vote to abstain
nifty trick. I'll start trying it
okay, leave my vote at FFA
second
FFA hate
blah, diplomats
we're voting on hate atm
blah diplomats
here, Wolfypaw... "Who here feels strongly about FFA vs FiF in Hate"?
