I feel like Brandon Sanderson is the only current author that's really good.
His efforts at completing Wheel of Time after Robert Jordan's untimely demise were an abomination. Those books were so horrible I can't bring myself to give his stuff a chance.

As for comparing Martin to Tolkien, yeah it's definitely not for the short attention span. Martin's work is so dense it has spawned an entire youtube subculture of content creators trying to string together predictions from the thousands of clues Martin embeds to misdirect the reader.

Tolkien was a christian and presented a stratified world where good and evil were racial characteristics. Martin is an atheist who presents a much more bleak view of the human condition where morality is far more ambiguous. In his other work, Martin has made clear that he set out to deconstruct Tolkien's simplistic views of morality.

david gemmel was perhaps the best modern heroic fantasy author. Check out his books.

Need GRRM to finish the f#cking series so I can move this to the completed section.
He's been pretty busy lately, but I'm sure he'll finish it eventually.

What was so bad about it? WoT was a huge mess to be cleaned up, and i felt his writing was better than Robert Jordans (typos in particular trigger me). I know there was a certain word he used alot, but thats kind of a minor thing.

What i like best about Brandon is his originality. Fantasy is always so generic and boring, but Brandon has lots of new ideas that keeps it fresh imo

More Syfy than Fantasy but I like his work. Just reading "Last Year" right now.

+1 for Dave Eddings (Belgariad and Malloreon)

What about the Chronicles of Amber from Robert Zelazny ?
