Default Mage questions

1. Is there any gear a mage can wear or equip to give us a root or snare?
2. I am having trouble timing when to recast a pet. Is it basic practice to start recast of pet when current pet hits half hp?
3. Is there a way to have pet not attack a mob and just stand there and take the dmg?

1) Root - https://wiki.project1999.com/Wooly_Spider_Silk_Net (Carry lots of these, for a mage to feel like a wizard / enc in terms of having root all the time you will need a entire bag full 8 or 10) this converts plat especially into roots for you, as you can recharge these root nets at a vendor (use vendors that don't have full lists!!!)

2) It all comes down to timing and getting use to the dmg output of the mob your pet is fighting... melee mobs don't magically just spike out some damage, their max hit is set in stone the only thing that is somewhat random is misses.

Also Remember you don't have to land the new pet as your old one is dying. You can summon the new pet and right before you finish the cast hit the "Go Away" Button on the pet UI window. When you get good at the timing of this you can literally have the new pet almost instantly pop out right as you "de-summon" your previous low health pet.

3) No, pet sit and whatnot doesn't really work, even spamming pet back as soon as the pet gets hit they will retaliate.

Ways mages can root:

1. Use an earth pet, it casts root

2. You can also use a 2hb off Grizzleknot in SK called "Treant Staff" that procs root. These sell for 25-50pp but it can be hard to find them. I keep one on my mage and one on my monk.
https://wiki.project1999.com/Treant_Staff

3. You can use and recharge wooly spider nets as noted above but they are expensive, between 500-1000pp each. You might want to spend a day or two farming those in Permafrost.
https://wiki.project1999.com/Wooly_Spider_Silk_Net

4. You can use Crystalline silk nets that drop commonly on spiders in Crystalline Caverns. In a couple hours of farming spider silks with my druid, I got seven of them. They only have two charges each and disappear if both are used. You can use one charge and then "recharge" it by selling a full one to a vendor, then selling all your one used charge nets and getting two charged nets back. They cost 18pp to buy back.

For snare, the only option I can think of (and can probably only be done at low levels due to trivial loot code for the warrens) is:
https://wiki.project1999.com/Ball_of_Burlap_Yarn (You can get this by doing the quest below, note the reward is not lore)
https://wiki.project1999.com/Miranda%27s_Dice

Your other two questions were answered completely it looks like.

In general, here's a vid showing pet chains with a summoning mob.

e: the /pet hold command was added much later in the game, won't be here on p99.
