They did that on test. It was called Project M. It was actually pretty fun. I made it to lv 10 as a Freeport Fire Beetle once... mostly by killing newb's in the newbie garden, and KS'ing them just to be annoying. [You must be logged in to view images. Log in or Register.]

I didn't get to experience this one but I read about it, may have just been someone on the internet lying (gasp), but the coolest one I heard of was a zombie plague where once infected you became a carrier and infected others. Something about PVP being enabled between infected and non-infected. Was probably someone BSing but I thought it sounded awesome.

You're probably mixing it up. That plague thing happened in WoW when zul'gurub was released, the last boss had a plague attack, and someone ported out of the raid while infected, and infected everyone else in town.

Monster play when done right is loads of fun for sure. Lord of the rings online had a whole mode devoted to it on the pvp side.

rofl, that's even better than my faulty memory! I can see how it could be used by epidemiologists, high level plague kills noobie town too quickly to spread!
