Gnome 100% -- wall-peek without using shrink pots, mostly neutral starting faction, good starting stats, good newbie area, and access to tinkering.

Racial hide is nice for emergency AFKs, but why roll a char based on not playing it? The only time I could see this being really useful is if you're a new parent or if you're a caregiver for someone. At that point you're probably going to need emergency AFKs frequently for at least a couple years, so this could be considered a legitimate benefit.

Mages can summon Infravision items starting at 16, then Ultravision at 29 so having racial UV is basically useless.

I have a lot to say about min maxing races to certain classes.

Its my opinion that when it comes to Dark Elves, they only have one class which I believe they are the best race for: Wizards.

Here are my opinions on DE Min maxing:

Cleric: On blue, Dark elves may even be the best Cleric. When it comes to Cleric races, you are balancing Ultravision, Hide, Sneak, Robe races versus item clickies for diety. Dark Elf clerics are granted Hide, Ultravision, robes, and the best item clicky necklace. They lose out on Sneak, other item clickies that humans get in abundance, and have the worst faction. When it comes to judging races on its ability to wear robes as a plus, the cleric is the most important, since among non INT casters, they can wear the most of those. The stat aggregate is not the best. Clerics can't use Ultravision as a spell so its valuable to them.

Enchanter: Dark Elves make the top 3 enchanters along with Erudites and High Elves. Erudites have the best stat aggregate. However, before Kunark, or without a goblin ring, Hide is extremely powerful on an enchanter for Charm breaking. Outside of Hide and stats, no races are any different.

Magician: Dark Elves aren't notably better Mages then other races. Hide is most useless for the Mage class, being detrimental to the usage of pets. Only useful for medding without a pet. At least can choose Agnostic for less than bad faction in the world. Not bad, but basically the same as others!

Necromancer: Same as Magician. Must choose Innoruuk. Not bad, but basically the same as others. They pale gravely to Iksar's though. Gravely in the bad way.

Rogue: Dark Elves only grant early Ultravision to the Rogue class, and barely that. The stats aren't ideal, and all other Rogue races have access to the Mask of Deception, making choosing a Dark Elf as your base race pointless.

Shadow Knight: Dark Elves are really cool looking Shadow Knights, which is a shame, because they are absolutely the worst choice. All of the special abilities granted from being a Dark Elf the Shadow Knight already gets in their class kit like Hide or UV. The stats, lack of Slam, Regen, Frontal Stun immunity, or better faction offered by all other races makes it the worst choice. The only min max here is the fashion.

Warrior: Dark Elf warriors are close to the worst as well. Hide is useful on a warrior to a tiny extent, but the stats are awful.

Wizard: Hide is actually mildly useful on Wizards, who don't have a pet dying to get in the way of it. You trade just being shy of the best stat aggregate for Hide, which is worth it! Since DE's can choose Solusek Ro just like all the other races, which is even better for faction than Agnostic, and very little other makes any difference between the various Wizard races, I consider it the best race for a Wizard, and the best class for a Dark Elf!

Hide on a mage can be very useful to go AFK in places with KoS mobs who don't see invis. Low level dungeons such as Nurga/Droga, for example. Hide works as an infiite-duration invis that will only be broken if you're unlucky enough to have someone aggro a caster who will cast an AE nuke in range to you.

Semi-new to pet classes, but would a See Invis on your pet not allow you to Hide and not lose the pet, since it can still see you?

Agnostic Dark Elves can get into a surprising number of towns if you don't turn in your noobie letter for a robe (though there's some spots in said towns that will KoS so keep an eye out) and even a DE Shadow Knight can use most of the towns on Antonica and Odus with a bit of faction work (Halas is a royal pain though and most of them will always hate you regardless).

What is lost by not following Innorruuk as a DE mage? Anything?

Nope. Invis spells kill the pet through an automatic means, whether or not it can see you. It doesn't even matter the *type* of invis. Its a mechanic.
