I love how people are mad about this. It's like driving in the carpool lane by yourself for years and never getting caught. You know it's against the law but you do it anyway. The only flaw in your analogy is that the carpool they have been driving in has been routinely patrolled by police.

A better analogy would be waking up and finding that they started enforcing j walking laws, except they retroactively handed out tickets based on past transgressions.
