For a mage in my case. Is ultra vision much of an upgrade over the other visions types on green? How valuable is the hide skill?

They pretty much have only innorruuk as a deity, the symbol items seem decent (clicks snare sounds pretty useful).

Stats wise they seem alright?

Being evil screws you over I imagine for town access.
Race really doesn't matter much for mage. Stats are all pretty close and wont matter at the end of the day, no notable racials outside of tinkering for gnomes. Ultravision might be nice after we see a "fixed"/stopping point in the developer's attempt at fixing nighttime. Being evil is almost never a real hindrance, if anything it just means you don't need to manage some factions and have additional hunting options.

Play whichever you enjoy looking at the most (Dark elf has near top-tier fashion).

Hide can be really valuable, depends on where you plan to hunt and if you are going to solo a lot. I would not have picked another race for my wizard, hide was so convenient for afk medding right in the middle of an area where mobs are passing through. May be a different case for mage if you plan to group mostly. But don't underestimate the convenience of hide, regular invis pales in comparison.

Invisibility has a random duration timer. Hide has no timer. It is a pretty damn nice skill to have. It works ~40% of the time, and you can see if it is successful simply by conning a mob. It's cool down is reasonable enough to re-try in the event of failure.

But, keep in mind, as a magician, if you hide when your pet is summoned, it will destroy the pet.

Dark elves are feared by every other race. Why? Because they are the best.
Best vision.
Best at hiding.
Best looking.
Best skin tone.
Best god.
Best.

For Mages, since INT is really the only consideration, DEs are totally fine compared to other races. Sure, you get some QoL with the good/neutral races, Gnomes can tinker, etc., but nothing really material IMO. All the races except Human are pretty close to each other in starting INT, so you can't go wrong picking a DE (as opposed to a class like Enchanter where you need high CHA and then also kind of have to worry about INT, so DEs are not as good of a choice...although still not a terrible one for an Ench either).

At level 29 a magician can summon an item that casts ultravision.

Yeah, gnomes for wallvision and sending eyes to zone-in without needing shrink pots is probably the best racial advantage for mages, but being able to see is also nice.
