When soloing, whether to root/dot or do a combination of melee and spells is situational, sometimes optional, and often affected by your level.

In general, some combination of spell casting and melee is usuable most of the time. Certainly pre-Afflication you will want to do this. Post Affliction the root/dot really comes into it's own as an option. However, once you get the pet, you will find that you will frequently have to "tank" for the pet for a portion of the fight. On some fights, particularly as mobs begin hitting very hard at the higher levels, you will want to mainly root/dot and just use the pet sparingly or not at all in some cases.
