A conservative publication paid Fusion GPS, which subsequently hired Christopher Steele, to conduct research on several candidates for the GOP nomination. The publication ceased contracting Fusion once Trump won the nomination. Subsequently, since the conservative publication's paid research had turned up such a gold mine of compromising information about Trump, Fusion was able to market this research to the Clinton campaign. Steele was hired by Fusion before Fusion was hired by Perkins Coie/Marc Elias on behalf of the DNC.
