The chirch of climatology demands that you sacrifice your firstborn to moloch to offset your carbon footprint.

When Huaynaputina erupted in 1600 it expelled over 7 cubic miles of particulate matter. The following year was the coldest in 6 centuries, causing crop failures all over the Northern hemisphere. When Krakatoa erupted in 1883 the effects were felt worldwide. Global average temperatures dropped by over 1.4' C the next year, and the climate was chaotic for the next 5 years. The sky looked different for quite some time afterward, with the particulate matter creating a reddish hue, inspiring the backdrop of Edvard Munch's The Scream. When human beings industrialized, they began injecting millions of tons of previously sequestered carbon and other gasses into the atmosphere, far outweighing the volume of matter expelled by these eruptions. The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has nearly doubled in the last 200 years, reaching levels not seen in the last 800,000 to 20 million years, at an unprecedented rate. CO2 and other greenhouse gasses have the opposite effect of particulate matter, trapping heat and causing an increase in global temperatures. These conclusions are tested with the same scientific rigor as the sequencing of the human genome, the creation of nuclear weapons, the effects of leaded gasoline, asbestos, cigarette smoking, etc etc. If you doubt these facts at this point without reasonably falsifying the theory (hasn't happened yet) or putting forth a more plausible theory (hasn't happened yet), then you are simply ignoring reality. That said: 1. It's already too late and the atmosphere has already been changed. Emissions only continue to increase and we are already seeing positive feedback loops > negative feedback loops. 2. We don't know if the effects will be net positive or net negative (probably negative) 3. There is no stopping 1 billion chinamen living in a selfish and destructive culture from destroying the planet even if every American and European goes green (they already grinding up baby rhinos for boner pills and read about bile bears). Never-mind the 2 billion Africans who are expected to industrialize late in this century. 4. Fascism is the only form of government capable of combating climate change, but was defeated in WW2. Honestly the best chance we have as a planet is to leave the most advanced nations (technologically and culturally) un-tethered by strict greenhouse gas emissions (toxic air pollution is a different matter), so that they may continue to innovate and develop technology to save humanity (clinical immortality, self-aware self-improving artificial intelligence, genetic engineering) What you absolutely shouldn't do is make ANY form of personal sacrifice for the sake of the climate. The people who own this country and own you sure as hell aren't giving up a single god damn thing. | |||
