Default Raid class Wiz / Mage

I understand wizards are basically terrible until raiding, but what level does that change happen? If I grind to 46 can I expect to start getting into raids or do I have to push to 55 or 60?

Same question for a magician. Can I expect as a mage to actually be a damage dealer or is all my time going to be CotH and Summon rods?

You can get into PoH and PoS raids very easily at 46 >.>

(really though, you still aren't the best at raids till giant / dragonbane)

To kind of piggyback off this, how competitive is wizard damage in comparison to rogue/monk/ranger? Always wondered if it was worth it in the end for a wizard.

Wizard is and has always been burst. You will not show up on DPS charts since they take total dmg / time, but on fights like vox or gore, wizards can make or break the encounter by bursting them down.

Even if you get the rend / DD robe or clickies, you'll do okay dps but melee will do more.

With new CH mechanics, wiz burst may be more important but who knows.

Magicians don't nuke in raids, just coth and rods.

Wizards only do well in mostly Kunark raids because the Velious mobs have such high HP and the fights go on for so long.

However, wizards are most valued for their ability to Translocate to bind. This way, the wizards can help get all the melee into and out of ToV for quicker mobilization.

The premier wiz raiding nuke is lure of ice and you get it at lvl 60 btw. It only does 875 damage but is mostly unresistable unless you try casting it on the ice giants. You honestly don't even have to lvl you wiz past 52, that way you can help with Nagafen. At 52 a wizard has everything they need to help the raid - ports and TL :P

Premier wiz raiding nukes are giant and dragon banes*

Volleying till OOM or dead actually does quite a bit of dmg

If it’s a long ass velious fight where a mage can use its pet and it’s not super resistant, a mage can beat out a wizard with bane nukes. If resistant and the fight drags on way too long a mage can win. With high raid dps a wizard can dump dps faster than a mage + pet could hope to keep up.

More realistically:

Heavy aoe fight where pet dies? Mage is a rodbot.
Too dangerous to have a pet out? Mage is a rodbot.
Kunark mob? They die so fast wizard nukes are OP.

Wizards have lures, banes, and heavy hitting nukes. Pet advantage is often not possible due to raid dynamics. Mages have no lure style nukes.

In velious it’s mostly about melee dps and, if available, charm dps. Mobs have too much hp for a mana bar to realistically compete unless total raid dps is sufficiently high that mobs don’t drop before blue mana bar dps is exhausted.
