I've bashed meme culture before for being the stupid thing it is. A generalized picture with some words on it. Not really well thought words, either. Dumb words, by dumb people, for dumb people. Bite-size thought viruses that infect critical thought deficient brains. This is right here is the vehicle by which we influence minds and it's pathetic.

i think people just need to be aware that humor can be a method of warming you up to ideas that you would find pretty abhorrent if presented to you in a straightforward way. memes are just the simplest vehicle for this since basically anyone can make them and there are a million free platforms to spread them. even people who are capable of critical thought dont necessarily think critically about the humor theyre exposed to and what the actual message of it is, so in a way its kind of a shortcut into your brain that circumvents your logical response to ideas.

memes may not have single-handedly caused it, but it isn't unreasonable to attribute a role to memes in the dark journey that brought that dude to this conclusion. if it doesn't traumatize you or isn't met with visceral rejection, repeated exposure to a thing most certainly does desensitize you to it. that's the importance of taboo, not only for ordinary man, but enlightened man. also, Rebecca's post is spot on.
