as more expansion came in EQ, PvP got worse and worse. by the time the Zek merge happened the devs had effectively killed what made eq pvp fun and interesting.

the luclin expansion introduced the first zones where pvp was disabled: the nexus and the bazaar. it got worse with pop including the books and plane of tranquility. pvp would happen near the zone outs, and people would just click back to the lame pvp "safe zones". then instancing became a thing. then they removed the corpse runs from pvp deaths and made us all spawn in some bullshit graveyard zone when we died in pvp.

luclin was the beginning of the end for eq pvp. why would anyone ever play a pvp live progression server, when it would quickly advance to a point in the game's history where pvp is effectively coded out of the game?

no. project 1999 is our best hope for a chance at experiencing eq pvp as it was. and the devs here have told us that a second pvp server is coming, so it's really just a matter of time before red 2.0 (or purple, or w/e) is released.
There is a whole lot of subjectivity in there. Not everyone agrees that EQ PvP sucked in PoP era. A lot of people were into it. Not everyone thinks its great to not be able to raid because 1 small group of hardcores keeps training you. Not everything thinks safe zones ruin the game. Etc.

My guess is most people like to PvP a lot -- but they need to progress their characters regularly to avoid burn out. This simply can't be the case when only 1 guild dominates the raid scene. 1 guild dominating the raid scene is inevitable. Then people feel like the server is dead and quit.

As for getting close to recapturing classic EQ PvP...you'll need a time machine for that one. Players just simply know too much, their hardware is too good, and they are willing to use cheats in their race to the bottom to be the best of their childhood video game.

regardless, a live progression server with whatever weirdness you find on live servers these days is not what the p99 pvp community is after.

our salvation rests solely on nilbog and rogean, and the second pvp server they have already been planning.

Server needs to have time locked level caps so we can really get value out of early level content. Release weekend cap at 5, first week 11, fortnight 17, etc with 39 being the cap after 6 months.
That's a bit too slow, but yes I think it's good to have a leveling speed limit, especially new servers. It's actually realistic to Classic EQ too, considering the amount of server downtime during those first couple months.

I'm a casual scrub so, here's how it goes down:

step 1: get outleveled

step 2: get farmed by higher levels assisting lower levels (don't say this won't happen, it was constant when I was playing on Sullon Zek. I remember the number 1 ranked neutral player on the leaderboards was a level 30-something druid who rolled with a gank squad that would incapacitate high and mid levels so he could kill them)

step 3: get farmed more

step 4: bail
That's not going to be the experience on a current Red server with a proper ruleset. Sullon Zek did not have level limits for PvP. It did not have a LnS policy.

No ruleset will solve the problem. The problem is EQ PvP is a bag of dogshit, and red players are colossal fuckheads that no one wants to play with. Enjoy your current red server, its all you get or deserve.

Of course a ruleset will solve the problem. That's the entire point of making changes to a game. EQ with PvP is much better than EQ without PvP in this day and age. It's hilarious that PvE people try to call PvP players "dumb" when it's far easier to do PvE, and literally braindead most of the time, just going through exact prescribed motions that a little child could do.

I'm pretty new to red and I'm really enjoying it.

Forget what you've heard on the forums. Yeah there's some sad souls on red, but there's actually a lot of pretty normal people too that are super fun to hang with. Owning dirtbags together with the good guys has a sense of comraderie and fun that I have not experienced on blue or green.

Is PVP in EQ balanced? Hell no. It's still a better solution than /list camps and lawyerquesting though. If you want a coveted camp or raid target, you better be willing to fight for it. You're not entitled to pixels just for standing in a line or being the first one there. Arguing in tells with people over what's fair or allowed on green got real old.

It's ironic because people think red is the most toxic community on P99, but I find the pixel lust and self-interest to be far worse on blue/green. Most people there just wanna zerg and collect pixels than learn how to be better at the game. That's not why I play. If I'm not learning or having fun, I just do something else.

PVP is the spice to an otherwise stale dish everyone's had a thousand times. Play on green for the nostalgia then come on red for a real challenge. A new PVP server would be cool but there's still lots of fun to be had on the current one.
