99% of Velious armor looks like shit.

Baby diarrhea type of shit.

THAT bad.
The original artist moved into a management position and the design pressures changed.

I liked that the original models looked like they were miniature figurines sculpted for dungeons and dragons. They had a quality that made them look like they were painted with acrylic miniature paints and used techniques a miniature painter would use. Limited palette, black lining and stuff like that.

Velious is a mess of detail and colour that exaggerates the way textures stretch on these kind of models.

The giants were pretty cool though.

I think that's why I liked WoW's art style way better than EQ2's. It owned what it was. EQ2 tried to be too 'realistic' and just ended up looking bland because the tech was too limiting to pull it off. WoW went full cartoon and it looked right.

As a Dark Elf, I'm extremely happy with the appearance of my SS plate set. But man, the Vindi BP is so good. It really deserves to also LOOK good.

The cartoon-yness of WoW is one of the reasons I couldn't get into it, but you're absolutely right that they at least accomplished what they set out to do with it. Goofy, but intentional.

That's actually a great point. With D&D or Warhammer 40k models, you can easily make details shine by using a contrast method of keeping the nooks and crevices' of the model dark to create depth and then highlight edges with a bright color.

This definitely sounds like the method that was used to create the earlier armors.
