Weapons don't work on shm pet.
You can buff them the same way you can buff players. Just their HP bar don't move when say you hit them with STA the way it does with players. (str,AC,HP,Haste, etc)
Haste and STR are probably the two biggest buffs you can give them.
I don't know the max hit of the max level pet, sorry.

---
Wiki says max hit is 45-52. I can't confirm if this is true though.

the 52 dmg pet wiffs a lot less often and its average hits seem to be a lot higher

if you're going to be killing stuff for a while it's definitely worth resummoning til you get it

I recommend all shamans get a Mage reclaim item. It allows you to chain summon a max pet. 55 pet is a good power increase over 49 even though max hit only goes up by 1. Higher level pet means more hits and higher average hit. Defensively it is tougher and has a good chunk more hp.

Don’t forget to toss your pet a str buff.

52 is max hit, as others have said, get a mage reclaim clicky to cycle pets faster.

Cast Maniacal Strength then Focus for double strength buff action.

Use celerity for haste.

THIS! It's like the developers gave Shaman an extra spell, and a useful one (Reclaim Energy), but instead of making it available the normal way they only made it work through an item that you have to do a quest to get ... albeit an easier quest than Cann II. If you wouldn't skip Cann II because the quest is too hard then you absolutely shouldn't skip getting a Mage focus item.

Torch of Alna was one of the first quests I did with my shaman. Helpful even when you're not trying to chain summon. For example if you're about to gate or zone with a pet, click it to get some mana back.

Or if you desperately need mana quickly you can click https://wiki.project1999.com/Fang_Amulet_of_Calling or https://wiki.project1999.com/Fairy-Hide_Mantle to insta-summon a pet at full health, click the torch to get 350-450 mana instantly. Rinse and repeat until you're out of charges. The Fang Amulet is only 100-200p so I always keep one fully charged on my shaman, and the Sky Shoulders are rechargable with a mana battery.

With the 55 pet you can also start to look at your summoned pet as a pocket 800 emergency mana pool in groups. At 60 with torpor this isn’t as big of a deal but 55-59 and 60 before torpor when mana is always a juggling act, you can capitalize on those moments where you are full mana to bank that reserve pocket for later.
