Default PLing pet classes

This might be a silly question. I know that pet classes can't have their pets do more than 50% of the damage to the mob. But, does this mean 50% of the total health of the mob or 50% of the total damage dealt? My reason for asking this is if I want to PL a pet class, can i get it low and they just send the pet in to finish it off and get fully xp? Or will the pet take a chunk of xp even if the pet really only too a couple % of the mobs health and not a full 50%?

It is of the remaining amount. I'm assuming you're either a monk or a warrior looking to kill then zone so the answer would be the remaining health becomes the new 100%.
