He aimed too high. Star Citizen had an initial goal of $500,000 and now they're up to what, $40 million? Not saying that would have happened but donations for anything tend to have a snowball effect. I think a lot of people didn't bother because they were pretty sure the goal wasn't going to be hit.

Plus instead of treating it like he was presenting an idea for a game to a board of directors of some venture capital firm, he acted like everyone was already sold on the idea to begin with. They slowly released information about classes, races, zones instead of showing everything up front like other games. It was quite literally the worst run kickstarter for a game I've ever seen. It's like he expected his name to carry the game somehow, but he hasn't made jack shit in 10 years and most gamers (even ones that play MMOs) have never heard of him.

All that being said, I'm still disappointed. But at this point we need to all realize (Brad especially) that an EverQuest style game is a niche market and you need to develop it accordingly.

Agreed, and to be quite honest if Brad wasn't on board it I don't think it would have hit $100k.

The more they added, the more it was shaping up to be some kind of EQ clone.

I don't think they were counting on the Kickstarter for funding. It was just a resume builder to present to investors. They haven't landed a good deal yet. I don't think it is a big surprise. They are in a position they probably expected to be in. They got the game as far as they could and have built anticipation and hype over the game. Now they just have to find an investor that is impressed with it. Up until now it has basically been a race to build as much as they could before funding depleted.

There is no way this is the position they were expecting to be in at this point.

Hmm, I guess I'll take Brad's word for it that they fucked up and that it wasn't part of their master plan to crash and burn their kickstarter attempt and then run out of money to give people paychecks.

I could be wrong though.
