What does it mean that this guy preaches to and criticizes so many people about how to make it through life and he can’t get through his day to day without abusing substances?

Well considering he was given anxiety medication while his wife was undergoing cancer, it makes sense that he wants to quit. It gives 0 context whether he is abusing the drugs or just wants to get off. I'd wager that he was probably using while his wife was undergoing cancer treatment, continued to use them for awhile and now wants to quit and wants to do it through a method of treatment. If only every drug addict could go to rehab and have it stick, we wouldn't have half the idiots on these forums.
