Yes, that's precisely what is meant. it's a lot more succinct to say "african american race" than it is to say "group of black people who live in and/or have ancestors who lived in the US." If the meaning has been conveyed, then the word has fulfilled its purpose - regardless of whether or not you think it's idiotic.

Okay how are black people in the US genetically different than black people from other places?

Irrelevant. Nobody said that race was exclusively determined by genetics. On the other hand, I have yet to encounter any white African Americans.

I had a friend who was white and from south africa. She became an american citizen so then would she not be a white african american? right?

The name you refer to doesnt bother me as I really am not decided on my religion but my surname got changed in the past that was "Boobjob" on Giganto. If Boobjob is more offensive then this... I just dont know what the hell is going on in your heads.

No. "African American" implies ancestry from native sub-Saharan Africa. There have been a few cases of people who were not black attempting to claim African American status for one reason or another and they have been essentially uniformly rejected.

i'm glad you put that you were kidding. i wouldn't have known with you. i know you don't like me.

Personally. my gr-gr-gr-grandfather was black. but that's a very small percentage of non-white blood. Most people who know me would probably think i was teasing them if i told them about my grandfather.

I make no claims about my heritage. It is what it is - genealogy and records can show me who I come from but it's up to me to show the world what kind of person I am. Personally i don't identify with one race more than any other. I think we should stop segregating ourselves into different categories and just be people.
