Just go to Everfrost and run up and down the frozen river for an hour, your swimming skill will shoot up without having to swim!

and OP, your best bet is learning how the /loc function works and using the maps to find an island. Alternatively, you can install zliz or nparse for the maps, but you'd have to do some configuring and I wouldn't want to do that while swimming! (assuming you haven't found land yet...)

You stand in the canoe and right click it and then you'll be driving it. They're very slow - like the previous guys said it's about equivalent to a swimming skill of 10. Right click it again (or jump) and you'll stop controlling it and can walk normally.

I was going to try and find out - but apparently this boat floats 3 feet above the water so I can't get into it...
