Default Ivy Bridge

Building a new PC Soon. Ivy Bridge coming out in a few days. Been a lot of hype about it but I'm reading that it's not that great for overclocking compared to sandy bridge. Might have to get water cooling? Ugh...

Discuss~

Haven't seen anything that makes me upset that I bought a Sandy Bridge a few weeks ago. If you want to overclock either SB or IB reasonably, you'd probably need to water cool, yes.

Writeups that I've seen seem to infer that IB will be -more- overclockable than SB, but then again, there are so many factors in overclocking properly that it's tough to take anyone's word for it this early in the game.

Either way, I'm not upset in any way with Sandy Bridge, so I certainly won't be upgrading. YMMV.

I'm always hesitant about 'the next great thing' because of the media hype. Sandy is a proven performer. If you absolutely have to build the system now I'd go Sandy but if you can wait and see what really happens with the Ivy that would be my route. It's too early to tell anything concrete. I would say it also depends on what other hardware you're looking to pair with it.

speeds are becoming so fast that the disadvantages of OC - mainly heat of course - outweigh the performance increase.

just my 2c

but if you must:

Most reviews have IB at around a 4-6% performance gain over SB. They also run hotter. I'd go for the SB because it overclocks better on air and requires less expensive cooling.

Oh I know...I was talking generally. Looking at 3G+ speeds nowadays w/o OC versus heat considerations, lifetime of the hardware, yadda yadda.

if your computer is for games the only noticeable benefit I see with ivy bridge is that it allows for PCI-E 3.0

If you're buying a 3.0 compatible card, then there really is nothing to be discussed.

Looks like I'm going to be waiting some weeks. I had everything specced out on newegg including the 3770k, but still no 680 gtx in stock, so I held off on ordering. 3770k got removed from my cart because thats out of stock now too.
