Default Spell ranges

I have never played a pet class before P99 so I don't know how the spell ranges were in old school EQ. Here's my problem. While I am fighting a mob I try to stay at max distance. So I am at max distance for my dots to land ont he mobs and those spells hit. But if I try to heal or haste my nec pet I have to move closer to the pet to do so. Was it always like that? I don't find myself in that position too often so the first ime I noticed it was today. It could have been a z axis thing since I was on a hill and they were below me. Anyone else experience this?

Each spell has its own spell range.
