Mage Pet Spells

I played a mage on live, and I remember that all of the pets would cast every 6 seconds except the air stun, which was 12. This matches lucy precisely:

So they should be casting those spells very frequently. And in fact I remember that magicians were concerned that their pets were wasting time casting these spells rather than meleeing and GZ was sure that it was not a problem. I recently bought a Magician and my feeling was that the pets were not casting nearly enough. So I went out to DL, maloed some green/lb cons and sicced my pet on them. I was carefully watching for resists, but between the low level of the mobs, malo, and getting lucky on the level of the pets every spell landed.

Now my (possibly faulty) memory is that the pets would cast every 12/6 seconds like clockwork. But even if it was somewhat random, I am 100% sure that the earth pet rooted more than once a minute. This is not only a pretty big issue for mages, but I'm wondering whether dragons are casting their aoes frequently enough.

Would also like to add that I feel pet aggro is screwy on this server as well. I will pull stuff in KC with burst of flame and half the time the mob will ignore my pet's full round of melee and still go at me. I guess sitting aggro is some of this, but still i never have this problem on my enchanter with charmed pets.

are you hasting your pet first? on red they cast like crazy. air pet will perma stun and earth pets will perma root.

edit: i actually have no idea if haste increases chance to cast.

i guess the point is, mage pets already stong as hell. you really need a buff?

edit: Also I would add that Kazmeir does not feel overpowered at all in comparison to my other characters. That might change if I managed to get him an epic perhaps.

Come on Treats, there is just no way there should ever be 1 minute between casts. I played a mage on live and those little buggers would spam their spells like crazy.

Besides Treats you should love this, because I just checked and the Queen is not aoeing every 12 seconds which is the cooldown on her AOE.

Doesn't Queen cast other spells? I will go test it on EQMac I guess with a level 4 Mage.

earth pets have no problems keeping players perma rooted on red with 100+ mr.

pvp resist mechanics are different, as opposed to pve. 1 root might be enough to CC a player for 1+ minute. On the other hand, 1 root is not enough to keep a lvl 40/45 mob rooted for very long. This is why I believe they casted their special abilities every 6-12 seconds.

I completely agree with you sam on pvp resists being botched, but that's for a different thread.

Nice work Treats! Adding those up (and hoping I'm counting correctly) that means that Air casts every 19 and the rest cast every 9.2 seconds. Both are just over 50% more than the cooldown. That could be a bad combination though because it seems like Earth and Water cast like crazy and Fire is a bit more of a slacker there.

Anyway I think I'm pretty vindicated in my original bug post. Depending on what the code looks like we should perhaps see some more dragon aoes as well.

Can someone check if pet level matters? Lvl 4 lvl 30 lvl 49 then 55-60? Maybe of just 1 pet type like air or eath. From my experience on red the low level and high levels are like machine guns and the mid ranges are lackluster. Could be resists, just my recollection.

Question- Do mage pets currently work off a 'proc' system instead of a 'cast' system? That could be the problem, they're relying on proc code instead of caster AI which would likely cast a spell in short order after it came off cooldown.

This concerns the level 52 mage spell Vocaration:Fire and the level 58 mage spell Greater Vocaration: Fire

The following spells should be added to them:

Level 16 wizard spell: Shielding (buff, always puts up when not in combat)

Level 12 wizard spell: Cancel Magic (uncommon cast)

For Vocarate: Fire

This pet does infact give other pets in the same group Okeils Radiation buff. Was at a Seafury group and this pet buffed my Nec pet quite a few times. Pretty amusing.

I can also report that this pet casts dispell on mobs. I only have seen it once, as I've not used this pet much yet, and I'm also not sure if the pet had a reason to dispell (dog in kc), but I can confirm the casting of dispell.

I have used the 52 fire pet, it casts a combo of 5 different spells, 3 DD's (Lightning, force shock, and a fire based one) It also casts steel skin on it self (when not in a fight) and a damage sheild. I am not happy with the damage sheild it casts, it casts O'Keils Radiation, which is only a 2 dmg fire sheild. It's melee is about 30 dmg max.



Yes, this pet is lousy for soloing, and could be defeated 1-1 with almost any other 44 or 49 pet, but that's not where you should use this new amazing pet. The 52 fire pet is GREAT in groups. In general, it won't get hit on much in groups so the low HP's don't matter. And while it melee's for low amounts, it casts 200+ DD spells at a rapid click. Hard to tell resist rate, but I've been using this pet in KC for a few days now, and it's been an AWESOME group member. Like having an extra wizzie in the group. The stuns also help alot against casting MOBs. Even in melee, it can keep a MOB busy on a multiple pull while the group fights a second one (if you don't have a chanter handy, or you just get too many to handle). The damage shield is lousy, but it's rarely in melee anyway, so who cares.

Regarding earth pets casting time

earth elementals are the worst pets, all they do is waist there time rooting, its useless, until it gets fixed, stick with air or fire. the more hp dosent make up for the fact that the pet in a 2min fight will only do about 30dam cause the rest of the time it just sits and roots over and over again

Post 50th Fire Pets:

The reason that these pets need to be fixed is because the post 50th spells should have, in the very least, kept the Magician's power status quo compared to lvl 1-50. By replacing our standard Fire Pet with the Wizzie Fire Pet Verant has taken away a pet that had a lot of uses in various situations and replaced it with a pet that has limited uses in very certain situations. Effectively, this has lowered the Magician's power post 50th because the variety in pet summons has actually gone down because of this.
Suggestions: Make 52 and 58 fire pet non-aggressive pets, they are wizards after all…no wizard runs up to something to try and cast on it and melee it at the same time, so if this is really a wizard pet, make it stand back and cast. Also it has been suggested to give this pet the lvl 49 fire pet DS and maybe lower its Hp’s because it will not be fighting and will die fast this wouldn’t be too overpowering if tweaked a little.

Actually what pet canni required was a combination of good spell focus (improved mana preservation, the AAs that helped with mana costs, etc), always using a earth pet (most hps), and having a good pet focus (gloves of dark summoning, etc).

That reclaim AA (if purchased) actually broke "pet canni" because instead of mana back based on the reclaimed pet's hps , it gave back a flat percentage of mana based on the cost of the pet spell.

Maybe they changed it yet some more down the line, but on EQmac (and I suppose Luclin era too) the wise mage did not touch improved reclaim energy with a 10 foot pole.

Well, I'm not trying to hijack the thread, but if you are messing around with magician pets already, I think you've created a new bug.

For starters, I'm 25 gnome magician with my shovel focus item equipped ( not really pertinent info as the bug relates to damage, not pet health ).

Anyhow, earlier today, I was in Upper Guk, summoned level 24 earth pet and conning them seemed to be working. As in risky conned pets were doing roughly 18-22/23 max dmg and pets that conned formidable were doing 24-26 max dmg.

I logged back on recently, went to Najena. Summoned an earth pet and it conned formidable. I tested it against a mob and it was doing 18 max dmg. So, I summoned a new pet, same thing. Conned formidable and did 18 max dmg. I did this a third time, exact same thing.

I thought maybe it was a Najena zone thing so I left to Lavastorm and tried it there. Summoned a earth pet, conned as formidable, still 18 max dmg. As a level 25 magician, any pet that cons formidable and not risky should definitely be doing 23/24 - 26 max melee dmg, not the bare minimum of 18.


UPDATE: I relogged to see if that would fix my issue and it did.

What's interesting is the root is a spell with 3 second cast initially, but any subsequent cast is 0 seconds (casting message followed by resist message).

I'm not sure if this is how things are setup on P99 or if this is helpful.

I'll try and modify the parser to try and log pet casts, but kind of hard with them sharing names and resists not being logged unless you are being attacked.

There is some luclin era info also but still valuable as it occurred BEFORE the major pet revamp.

If there are logs from Hanks or Zeophyle - those were two magicians I played with. I duo'd with Zeophyle a bit on Qien, but that may have been in the time period before these logs.

Thank mcoy, unfortunately their log files were either end of Luclin or PoP era (which puts them post pet-patch revamp).

However, I did discover a plethora of data (over 2 hours of attack data / proc info) of an earth pet (either from the level 49 or 51 series, unsure yet). The data is in era, just a few days before Luclin launch.

We'll let the data tell the story, I'll try and get the script setup tonight and post the results (capture hit distribution on the pet as well).

Some of the initial cast times had to be determined by sleuthing the data. So Qien was quading in Cobalt Scar and his buddy was nearby.. sometimes he was in range of the melee hits, other times not. Sometimes a death message is logged, sometimes not. Other times it was by looking at the other members spell casting messages / frequency.

I feel fairly confident in the data breaks, the only exception I saw was the 22 second break in the beginning. This should be taken with a grain of salt as the mage was logged asking for help from Qien. It is possible he was running around trying not to die and pet ran out of range temporarily.

With that being said, it looks like earth pet casts it's root spell between 6-14 seconds.

I didn't want to post the raw data for all to analyze as it contains personal conversations, but a dev can always ask mcoy to PM the relative files if he's comfortable with it.

There are lots of other pets logged within the data, I'll see if I can isolate some of the 4 different types for mages.

So, has any developer commented on this issue or were any changes made?

I, too, played a mage back on live before Luclin era (quit during Velious) and I remember that my pets all casted frequently. In fact, the earth pet's root was so vital to my strategy as a mage as it was literally the only way I broke camps/dealt with adds, by backing my earth pet off as soon as the root was applied to a mob so I could just deal with one mob at a time.

I recently joined P99 two months ago and it is so obvious how much less frequently the pets cast their spells, that sometimes my pet would go almost 30+ seconds before even casting its root!! very frustrating and not classic at all.

(that being said, a big thank you to the devs for allowing us to enjoy this game! Please help us mages relive the experience too because we are 100% dependent on our pets, especially earth pet for CC!!!)

Just wanna say i remember mages spliting camps by spamming attack / back off on the first mob so it stayed out of range until it casted root, then tank/nuking down the second mob before root faded on the first.

When doing this work, if possible, bear in mind era rules that these spells should not be casted by mage pets at all until May 1999 patch era, and that EarthElementalAttack did not get its Root effect until October 1999.

You know if you hit your pet it, it would turn on you and become a hostile NPC if a mage pet? And persist after master zoned?

A necro pet would also turn on its master but only assist other undead after it was left behind.

Mages hitting their own pets and leaving hostile entities behind was big grief.

They said years ago they intentionally nerfed MAG pets because they thought they were OP and detrimental to the game regardless if it was classic or not.

Since I adjusted minimum hits to where they should be in another thread, I revisited these casting delays. With some tinkering I was able to get this much improved, pending update.
