I've found evidence on druidsgrove that treeform/illusion tree allowed the spellcaster to move in that state during "Classic".

"It has also been suggested that treeform be returned to the EQ Classic state where one was able to move around to be more useful; like an Ent. It would be logical to be restricted to a snare speed."

After speaking to some friends who were playing in 1999, most of them who could recall insisted this was the case until the end of Velious/Luclin era.

I vividly remember being able to move in treeform. You would have to cast illusion tree or whatever it was and then drop a coin on the ground. Don't ask me why it worked, but it did.
