Mine would be something like:

"How would you feel about reliving the glory days of the greatest MMORPG ever made?

Well set your clocks back fifteen years time... This is Project 1999."

Actually UO was the foundation for every MMO not EQ but you get points for coming in second.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meridian_59 (September 1996)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultima_online (September 1997)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Everquest (March 1999)

UO's development cycle likely overlapped with Meridian's, but Meridian beat them to the punch by a full year.

Everquest's development cycle was well under way by the time UO released, starting sometime in 1996. That's not to say they didn't pull ideas from UO, but it was hardly the foundation. I'd argue the real "mmo foundation" is a combination of these three games, with the majority coming from EQ.

Also,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MUD#DikuMUD

^The first real MMO, along with its respective spin-off code bases, and the prior code's released before it (but DikuMUD was the first base that really felt like an MMO, in my opinion). Without this, it's unlikely anyone would have even tried making a GUI MMO to begin with.

Project 1999 tagline: "You're in our world now"

MMO - 100,000 players...
UO - 1st..
EQ - Second
Meridian - Never..

I think Daoc actually would be third.

Well they did get in trouble for allegedly stealing code from DikuMUD

As for the tagline... Project 1999: Pixelated Nostalgia

Well... if you want to go by numbers...

Subscriber numbers peaked at around 250,000 in July 2003

^6 years after release.

We don't really have a timeline for that "first to 100k" number, though my understanding is it was less than a year after release, which would put us somewhere between March 1998 (6 months) and September 1998 (1 year).

These records show more than 225,000 subscriptions on 1 November 1999

^ 8 months after release.

(Source (http://everquest.allakhazam.com/story.html?story=1070)) More than 100,000 clerics, half-elves, gnomes, and other fantasy characters created one of the largest assemblies of game players to date ... "EverQuest currently has more than 430,000 active subscribers with new fans logging- on daily," said Scott McDaniel, vice president of marketing, Sony Online Entertainment. - July 29th, 2002

^ less than 3 years after release.

My point being that if you're going to try and call Ultima Online the "foundation" for modern MMO's, you need to give as much if not more credit to Everquest as well. It wasn't any one game, it was a combination of several that give us our WoW's and EQ2's and SWTOR's.

Well they did get in trouble for allegedly stealing code from DikuMUD

Wouldn't be surprised if they did... DikuMUD was A+. Plus the Godwars derivative codebase nearly invented MMO PvP. That shit was cut throat.

Advertising? Best when kept simple, the common man doesn't think.

"EverQuest, how hard can it be? You are not prepared."

Appealing to the Dark Souls crowd, and the little kid MMO crowd who think they are beyond old games.

Project 1999 Everquest-for aging hipsters that want to relive their early 20s since the memory is just a haze with all the drugs and alcohol they've done in the years since

Project 1999 Everquest-a midlife crisis cheaper than a sports car

I would just show the word "Everquest" with quick stream of in-game action of raids/characters/battles etc to Prince's "1999" song
"....and tonight we're gonna party like its 1999!!"

Remember that game you played in middle school? The one where you died all the time to rats and never could find any quests to do? Well, it was ironically called Everquest, and at Project 1999 we're simulating it for your enjoyment. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn the definition of the word 'poopsocking'. We've got 14 classes to choose from, and 5 of them are really fun all the way to 60!

Simply: "Loading, Please Wait..."

"We've closed off all new worlds for you." And instead of hot babes talking, it would be trannies. -- riff on the classic Trilogy ad "He's opened up whole new worlds for me."

" 'Ruin your own lands'... all over again."

Just because I feel like sharing some of my nerd...underneath DikuMUD there, the part about Simutronics and Gemstone?

Yeah, I have my Gemstone bard running around killing shit fully automated by Ruby scripts (which I wrote) while I'm playing P99. He's a beast.
