Pet commands being issued at extreme ranges should be ignored. Pet commands range should be within /say range only.

Psych_, you don't need to target your pet in order to command it to do stuff (attack, back off, etc). You do however have to be within a certain distance range of your pet, he can't hear you if you are too far away.

LiLOLMe -- posted 05-15-2001 12:56 PM "/pet target" will target your pet. Hitting the F1 key twice will also. You don't have to have your pet targeted to issue commands. They just need to be "within range". Seems about 'voice' distance.

(Comment: the /pet commands are actually recognized on the server as /say commands that don't get broadcast. So a /say command then a /pet command acts like two /say commands and one gets filtered out.)

From Sony / Verant
The range at which a pet will respond to your commands has been doubled.

These boots are incredibly great when you are using the lv65 Call of the Archmage (charm vs summoned). The insta cast invis will break charm for you so if you need to get a snare on the mob or other debuffs. It's also good for killing your pet if he's out of range of commands, but I have rarely had to usem for this reason.

These boots are cool for two reasons...

1. If your pet wanders off you can insta-kill it.

why not save the inventory space and make a button for the command /pet get lost. he he he

Because your pet has to be in range to respond to this (or other) command.
That goes for all pet commands but if you go invis vs animals then your pet will suicide whereever it is. And then anything it was fighting will come looking for you...

From 2002 (POP era)
It seems latest patch changed the pet commands to anywhere in the zone, it may be a bug though. But now, I can tell pet to back off, follow, get lost, etc. from anywhere in zone. I'm still going to do the quest for the fun of doing quests.

I always thought that this stuff already was working this way on p99.

If you park your pet then run to the other side of the zone and then tell him to follow ... he won't follow, will he? At least he won't until you move close to him and then he'll follow the command, I think?

He will follow.

The only one that has an actual functioning range component is /pet attack.

/pet guard - no checks.
/pet back - no checks.
/pet follow - no checks.
/pet sit - no checks.

Etc....

/pet attack is not working properly either. I parked my pet at a hut in EC with merchant targeted, right next to WC zoneline. Ran to Freeport zoneline and hit /pet attack button. Pet attacked the merchant and died.

Bump for this. Pet commands should not work outside of something very close to /say range.

More classic evidence:

Try using a pet to slow down a monster that's running away. It won't happen.
In fact, since your pet seems to have the same line of sight for commands as the
game inflicts for spells, sometimes it only has to go a very short way to be out
of range to call back. And Enchanter pets don't follow commands at all, which
is one of the reasons that their pets are sometimes less than welcome in groups.

Does anyone have any tips to keep my pet near me, under control, and not
running all over the place and bring back monsters that can slaughter me?
I've tried /pet back off, followed by /pet follow, is this the best method?
I also find it tough to keep my pet in hearing range so it will listen to
what I say. I wish I could yell for it to heel or something.

(Note: this is actually from Beta days, but shows that it had always worked this way)

Weird, I have tried it - with pet in range. I'll have to try again.

Furthermore, pets dont response to your commands when they are beyond a
certain range (not that big, in my experience), so it's futile to try and
tell them to back off.

Whenever I'm playing my mage with an elemental, and I don't see him anywhere
near me, I tell the group to run, run fast, don't look back, and head for
the zone, because I have no idea what the pet is killing, and if I'll be the
next target when he dies.

Another from a May 1999 page capture on EQ Stratics:

Lastly, I'll talk about range of commands. I'm not sure if this was a bug or if this was by design, but unless the pet is within "say" distance of you, he will not respond to any commands you give him. More to the point, you can't control a pet if you can't see the pet.
