It’s been a busy year for Project 1999 and we have some exciting news we’ve been really anxious to share with all of you. As some of you may be aware, in the past there has been both confusion and concern over the status of Project 1999. We have recently entered into a written agreement with Daybreak Game Company LLC that formally recognizes Project 1999 as a fan based, not-for-profit, classic EverQuest emulation project. The agreement establishes the guidelines that we as a project must follow, but it will allow to us continue to update the game without risk of legal repercussions. As a show of good faith to support the efforts of Daybreak Games, we have decided to reschedule our expansion release as to not conflict with the upcoming new progression server being released in the coming weeks.

We would like to personally thank all the folks at Daybreak and acknowledge how awesome it is for a company to work with and embrace the creations of their fans. This is really something that’s unique in the gaming industry.

The Velious release has been rescheduled to the following dates:

Saturday, August 1st for the Project 1999 PvP Server.
Sunday, August 2nd for the Project 1999 PvE Server.

We would also like to sincerely apologize to those of you that have already established plans for a May release. We know many of you had scheduled time off from work and even planned parties or trips. I hope you can understand the importance and necessity of the decision we have made and we encourage those of you waiting in the meantime to enjoy the Daybreak Progression Server when it is released.

I'm extremely happy that Daybreak has decided to formally allow you and staff to run this project.

And as far as the Velious release date being pushed back, I'm just happy it's actually being released. Thanks Rog, Borg, Sirk, and the other staff members for their continual support for this game.

Also, nice sig change Rog

I'm so happy for you guys that have run P1999 for so long. Having vellious pushed back is a very small price to pay for getting a WRITTEN agreement from people at daybreak. It must have been INCREADIBLE stress for you guys to have had to work under knowing that at anytime a lawsuit could have been dropped in your lap, or a declalration for you to shut down having all of your work and time go right down the drain. Gratz on moving to more legit and less stress state.

Exciting news to hear about the good-faith agreement with Daybreak. With them officially recognizing p99 as a 'fan-made classic emulator', will there be any potential collaborations in the future between you guys and them? Will it make getting the client a little bit easier, and perhaps client changes any easier?

Also shame about pushing the winter back but it's understandable. MOAR BETA!

Bierp
04-29-2015, 04:31 PM
Does the agreement only cover content through Velious?

I know there has never been a plan for P99 to go further, but the future is always in motion. If at some point you wanted to move P99 to the next expansion, could you?

This is incredible news. Though I realize a ton of folks won't understand why, the reality is the snap of a finger Daybreak could have immediately had this server shut down. Smedley is and has always been a rational man who despite a lot of folks personal feelings I have always and still do believe above all wants gamer's to have the experiences they want. I believe he realized that THIS server in particular provides something they simply don't have the manpower to create and support, and as such allowed this server to exist and thrive.

With the sale to DayBreak when I heard the Velious Launch, and how closely it will coincide with their planned Progression Server I immediately didn't believe that would bode well with Daybreak. Obviously they are spending a sizable amount of time and effort with their reduced staff to provide their player base with what they wanted (a new progression server) they need a return on that effort, and the release of Velious here would without question cause a conflict of players resubbing to enjoy that server.

Ultimately this is absolutely the healthiest choice for EVERYONE P1999 and EQLIVE players. Yes it's sad we won't see Velious for awhile, but BIG PICTURE. P1999 is alive, and is now onboard with Daybreak as they were with SOE which is enormous.

All in all, this incredible news in the long run.

Kudo's to P1999 staff for coming to an agreement, and an extreme kudos for Daybreak for doing the right thing for the folks who love and are so passionate about this era of the best game ever made. If any of you are reading this, thank you from all of us!

I'm so happy that you guys have reached a formal agreement with Daybreak Games on the legality of this project. I haven't played on here in quite a while, but I love knowing that the characters that I've put so much time into playing won't be going away. Smedley is not your typical boss man, as evidenced by this agreement and having the life of EQ Mac prolonged as it was. This is amazing when you think about it...so many fan projects get shut down for no good reason.

Interesting question that was posted on the EQ forum:

I wonder if Daybreak is doing this, in part, to take advantage of some of P99's zone files for running old zones on the progression server (i.e. EC/WC, Ro, FP)?

That would definitely be interesting and awesome for P99 to contribute in a way like that.

Wow very nice! wonder if they will now have a place to legitimately download a client now.

I'm sort of wondering this too. I mean technically the expansions we use here (Titanium Client) are now all part of the free to play version of Live EQ, so I don't see why they can't now host a place to get that client.

Edit: Also, Congrats on getting this deal done guys! Awesome news for everyone involved.

Just speculation here, but does this agreement possibly put into the works moving P99 over to the actual Everquest servers? I would hate for sometime down the road have them launch P99 as an official EQ server and have to pay to play it like all other progression servers. I doubt this would happen, but now that they have an agreement I could see it being possible.

I saw this suggestion on EQ Live forum:

Either P99 or EQLive should create a link for us to buy Everquest Titanium for like 5 or 10 bucks. In doing so this would support EQ for giving us the client, and itd give a legal place to purchase this non-existent client outside of file sharing sources.

good news and well done to P1999 and DBG staff for reaching this agreement.
having the emu server regularised is a very good thing.

I may even sign up for the "official" progression server now.

Ideal world (for me) would be P1999 staff running a progression server all the way to catch up with live.
This would mean luclin / POP etc advancements, but with GMs running it who give the super level of service and attention to detail that makes P1999 so good a server.

I would def pay for P1999 GM mentality combined with official expansions

P99 has been good for DBG, lots of free advertising for a game long considered dead. New progression server will no doubt bring back subs for them.

"As a show of good faith to support the efforts of Daybreak Games, we have decided to reschedule our expansion release as to not conflict with the upcoming new progression server being released in the coming weeks."

I understand that velious is being pushed back for p99 as to not interfere with daybreaks progression server release but if they are starting a progression server why even keep P99 around?

Because P99 is a unique experience that no progression server can equal, especially given all the modern updates they will have to endure/enjoy in spite of its "progression" status.

"We’re proud that the EverQuest community is one of the most passionate and engaged groups of players in the gaming world. We’re glad we were able to reach an agreement with the team behind the fan-based, not-for-profit emulation project as they continue to share their love of EQ with many. "

I have to say this is encouraging. Many emu servers (from various games) go down for various reasons and it sucks. This is such a huge corner stone in P99's foundation, not only do we get the awesome "made by players for players" classic world, but also a little bit of legitimacy to show the server shouldn't be going anywhere anytime soon!

On another note, I would pay to play as long as the target audience stayed the same and people didn't get greedy. That's when planes of knowledge's show up.

Well, Daybreak games just got themselves a fan. What a classy move on their part. I bet if Vanguard Saga of Heroes was running and part of the SOE hand over to Daybreak they would have handled it differently. Actually supported Vanguard or maybe just hand over the reigns to anyone wanting to run a fan based project.

This is the first time I've ever heard of a company taking this stance on a fan based project. Respect, Daybreak. Great news for P1999.

So now can we talk about P1999 on MMORPG.com? Now that its legitimized. MMORPG.com has a policy against talking about emu server games on their forums. I wonder if this changes that.

I think it's only fair that as long as they continue to support P1999 that they get some money from me, if I'm playing P1999. I'm not sure why this happened and I don't have time to read 17 pages of replies, short as they are. Is there something in it for p99? As far as I understood emulators (in general) have come under fire before and been protected by courts, which should have set a precedence which would protect p99 if DBG ever tried anything litigation wise?

Seems like, if anything, opening velious before the official progression server would have been a way to prove that p99 has something genuine and valuable. Not to mention a sort of 'told you so'. But whatever.

One step toward listing emulation servers with official ones to let all players enjoy them without having to find the client illegally.

People would be forced to either really support the server by paying $50-200 in sub fees each month for all the accounts they play or it would greatly reduce the amount of accounts accessible in the end game.

Over the last 5 years, most people just made a brand new account for each new character they made since there was no cost to making a new account besides setting up an email address. A lot of people in the end game have 3-6 accounts with some having 10+ just for themselves. Then there are the shared raiding accounts, the inactive shared/gifted accounts, the tracking accounts, and people's mule accounts.

Because there are no monthly fees, characters never die and are always accessible unless they get banned.

This is disappointing for me. I've had an account for ages, but could never get a copy of titanium to be able to play (I don't trust downloading it from that Arrrrgh site.) Getting the client more accessible (download either here or from the DBG site) would go a long way to getting people like me into the game.

Pretty irrational fear. But that is your choice.

I am sure if you have made any contacts while playing eq, someone has a copy you could borrow. I have 3 copies sitting on my shelf. 2 copies 2001 trilogy. Platinum, evolution, darn near every hard copy release since 2001.

Ask around. Nerds are everywhere.

When will we have a new server? One with no boxing just the same as p99. Poll how many would pay to play?

Not irrational at all. Someone sent me a link to download it, when I saved it to my hard drive, the virus program immediately popped up and said it was infected.

You won't be able to play then even if you find and purchase a copy of Titanium because of the .dll you are required to use for P99, which sets off a number of virus scanners.

Just because your anti-virus flags it doesn't necessarily mean it is actually is full of malware.

Most anti-virus programs these days are pretty awful at actually detecting real threats anyway.

EQ is srs buzness! I feel bad for Gyno and anyone else who took the time off for it but if it saves the server it's good to keep Daybreak on side :)

What is your virus program? If you name one of the dumb ones, then yes, it was irrational and you are likely computer illiterate. I'm an IT specialist and my download was clean as a whistle. You can even check the MD5 checksum when downloading these things to make sure nothing was added or tampered with.

Plus, get a real antivirus software. Also, when downloading from the arrghh place, you click the magnet link. You do NOT download any files from the site itself. If you did, you were probably clicking on an advertisement, not the real link. Download Adblock so you don't see those sort of things.

Wow, attacking my anti-virus before you even find out what it is.

I use AVG. I didn't download from that place, as I mentioned, someone sent me a link directly to the place to get it. I tried from there and it AVG came up with a problem. Maybe I'm no IT specialist, but when my anti-virus comes up with a flag, that worries me. Even if it's not a real antivirus. I won't be downloading it from anywhere, unless it was here or DBG, or I could find a physical copy for a reasonable price.

Again mostly irrelevant. The .dll files required to play on this server will set off your antivirus program, so in that respect as you mentioned, you will never be able to play.

Grimjaw

simply exclude or flag dsetup.dll as a safe file (open your antivirus program and find the spot in there to do that)

Just to understand this more clearly, is it true that someone at SoE released a version of the server code to the creative commons sometime in or around 2009? Is this also the reason why we must use a specific version of the client (e.g. titanium)?

My understanding is that due to several "holes" in the server code that was released, developers have to use old log files, a lot of guesswork (not to mention time investment), to release new content and fix existing bugs, etc. That said, does this announcement mean there will be more cooperation in terms of providing missing data, and if so, specifically to P99, EQEMU, and/or the entire EMU community potentially? What does this mean for users and game clients?

In a nutshell, is Daybreak endorsing EQEMU, or P99 specifically as an orphan work from a copyright perspective, or is this something else?

Fascinating stuff!

I think titanium was the last set of game dics with the original client before eqlive changed over to all the revamped stuff.Thats why i think we can only use that client.

P99 did support the Secrets of Faydwer client way back, they don't anymore... not sure what problems that caused.

AVG? Your definitely trolling me. And I fell for it. =[ Shame on me.

I'd suggest googling md5 checksum. You will understand my post much better once you do that. But you not downloading it doesn't hurt any of us and the way your acting, it probably is a good thing for all of us.

I love all my nerd breathren and just wish to help you enjoy p99 in all its glory. Except the bronies, they are an abomination unto this Earth, they can go away and never return.

True, I'd never buy Norton or any of the others. Shit's fine til it expires, then you get problems and hassle and end up paying for another year to make it go away.

Plus wasn't it found that antivirus companies were making viruses a few years back? No shit sherlock, who'd have thought

Swish and Citizen are correct here.

Learn how to browse the internet properly and viruses are actually quite hard to contract. Also, if you do get one, there is a program called combo fix. Updated daily, cost nothing and it works wonders. Research it. Use it. Love it.

No. To my knowledge there has never been a leak of any server side code from SOE or Daybreak. Project 1999 was forked from EQEmulator in 2009, which had already been through atleast 5 or 6 years of development at that point.

some big news for p99.
congrats guys! thanks for all the time and effort you put into making this server good enough for Daybreak. wow.

however, I would be very sad if this leads to P99 becoming pay-to-play.

I don't think I would mind pay-to-play, I just wouldn't want any type of pay-to-win things.
