View Full Version : Holly Longdale quote from DBG

Why only one zone of raid bosses? Longdale explained, “What we don’t want to do is instance raids, which is what casuals want us to do because they want to fight Nagafen. Casuals shouldn’t be allowed to fight Nagafen… that diminishes the achievement of others. That’s part of the challenge: You have to be better than the other guy; you have to be more strategic that the other guy.”
On a server of mage box teams spamming pets at raid targets. The derpest quote I've ever read from a game dev

The quote is apt, casuals shouldn't be able to kill dragons that's why blue is shit now.
Just because EQ live progression is an absolute unclassic trash pile doesn't mean she is wrong

At least they are taking a clear stance instead of introducing an awful and headache inducing raid system that tries to cater to everybody but is absolute garbage like on P99

Generally MMOs are kinda easy, it really just comes down to who can sit in a chair longer.

So this is confirmation that the raid system is the complete opposite of how classic EQ was designed to work? Neat. I agree with OP, that quote is absolutely right.

They also added variance, must make that classic too.

All the raid changes on the progression servers are hilarious. The zones now have multiple instances but only one has a raid target. So they basically set up a protected instance for whoever shows up first with enough numbers. Loling

Imagine 4000 ppl on a server all wanting a naggy kill.
How you gonna fix that mess? You aren't.
Should 3800 casuals get equal chances at naggy, vs 200 hardcore raiders? Holly could have worded her response better. But the real problem is much bigger.
You have like 4 servers worth of players. You added zone instances so there are plenty of non-raid loot. And now its a mess with so few mobs to raid.

I think they'll only care if they lose a big chunk of subs.

If they had FTE rules, this would make sense. I am not sure what strategy is involved with their KS inviting rules.

Fte isnt gonna matter if guilds can just lock everyone else out of the zone by filling it with boxes.
Some serious competition going on over the lolz

The funniest part of it is they have decided to move up the Kunark vote to 3 months on Ragefire, but not on Lockjaw - even though both servers had a majority vote to move up the date.

I thought majority on both said no to moving up the date.

I thought majority on both said no to moving up the date.
From the post by Holly:
When combining the 3-month and ASAP option, though, a slight majority of players on both servers voted for Kunark to come sooner than it would under the original rules.

Thats after you remove the majority that voted 6 mos on both servers.
The majority of everyone in the minority, were for 3 mos.
Both servers voted 6 months.
2nd on one server was now. Other server 2nd was 3 months.
Translation. They manipulated the polls to justify what they wanted to do.
Without instanced and time locked raid mobs, then both servers will just decline til another fippy and vulak.

You also have so much non classic built in mechanics like OP mage pets that "raid content" isn't really raid content is doesn't pose any more challenge then any of the other shit you ran through to 50

She's 100% correct. This is, and always has been, a brutal cut-throat game.
The only non-classic change I'd like to see would be a key for all raid content, that is as difficult to obtain than the Vex Thal key was. While we sat and bitched about it when we were doing it, knowing you were one of the extreme few who would ever see the inside of that zone was a great video game feeling, and looking back on it now that's the kind of shit that made Everquest great. Now they let any schmuck who's level 55 into the place, and it's full of scum and riff-raff. There's a liquor store next to TVK and a check cashing place right before you get to Aten.
I say this as someone who's been playing here since 2010 and who's highest character is level 40 (so get your Ejac's from Mcporty!) I am a casual player now; the only way I should get a cloak of flames is by selling 100,000,000 ports until I can buy one.

VT keying was brutal first time. But after keying first char, it was easier. I keyed 5 chars for VT and helped countless others do the same.
keying instanced content FTW!!!!

She would be right if this was 1999 or if it was still classic EQ. A lot of us who raided hardcore back then have no desire to get up in the middle of the night to kill raid targets. I guess that makes us casual.
Lets not forget that casuals are also the people that buy Kronos (their cash cow) and likely majority of their subs.

It doesn't have to be 1999 for her to be right, and you are correct sir: it does make us casual players.
The important thing to remember is that there is nothing wrong with that. We just shouldn't be running around with BiS gear unless we tunnel-quested it/bought rots/supplied bloomin' onions (kidding).
EQ Live is not fun because it has evolved to "keep up with the times" and in doing so, lost its identity.
They should stop trying to be the MMO K-Mart they've turned into, and go back to being Barney's.
We, the players, should stop demanding that they modify the game to accommodate our evolving lifestyles. Modifying the game means we're not playing Everquest anymore, we're playing something "else."
I feel like this is a flaw with publicly-owned companies that deliver products that are at their core "artistic." Answering questions about design based solely off of financial incentive leads to less innovation, pay-for-experience potions and all of the other carrion-eating bullshit that now pick the bones of old Everquest.

I find that hard to believe. We had GM's in a guild on my favorite mmo of all time (darkfall original ) And the favoritism was beyond belief

^ the fucking logic they tried to use in their decision made me question how fucking stupid you really have to be for this to even make a little sense "if I add up all the different votes besides the majority decision , they are now the majority !?" WTF
The bean counters.
At least this completely explains why Sony dumped EQ Next and the online division.
...if only they had cap'd server population to a set number and automatically started another server when it hit its cap- like every fucking MMO game that has come out in the last 5 to 10 years.....seriously, I give DBG's 12 months before they run this train wreck into bankruptcy

what a dumb statement to make. They pretty much use the "its classic" ideal whenever they want. Yeah its classic unless we need to sell you shit, or make the serverload bigger so we can get more subs.
fucking horse shit.
gotta respect any developer who tells casuals to F off

What she should have said, was that casuals should not be killing naggy until the real raiders are done with farming them, unless they get lucky with a spawn while the hardcore are somewhere else.

Yeah. Fuck those casuals. Wanting to play video games.
Glad she told people who wanted to play video games from their formative years to fuck themselves. I mean. Who do they think they are? This game is only for people who are willing to train and cheat for lootz.
Holly and her team of hipster douchebags need to grow the fuck up.
P99 can be all the hardcore it wants to be. I'm glad p99 is exactly the way it is. But to try and tell me a game with mostly revamped zones and 12 box mage armies clearing planes that it has to be that way because that's how it was in 99 is pure applesauce.
Missed opportunity.
What she should have said, was that casuals should not be killing naggy until the real raiders are done with farming them, unless they get lucky with a spawn while the hardcore are somewhere else.
Oh bullshit. A massive zerg of minmax boxers facerolling trivial content on a timer to cockblock some other massive zerg of boxing facerollers whose timer was a few seconds off is "real raiders" & "hardcore"? Seriously?
