I've been smithing in an attempt to get some banded mail made. I've been browsing guides from 1999 and it says you can use skewers to level up to 115. I'm at 68 right now and it's reporting trivial and I can no longer advance making them. Can someone take a look into getting this fixed?

Tradeskills are kind of hit or miss here. But I do have an old sheet from Live smithing (Aug '02) where it lists "old" and "new" trivials. It shows that skewers originally became trivial at 115; it was a patch in June 2002 which decreased the trivial point down to 38. Which supports what our Wiki says.

Smithing and JC were already in with fine plate and blue diamond jewelry available from the start, can't realistically undo that, so it's about as good as it's going to get.

The problem right now is there is a large gap of costs to level. It jumps from a few gold to over 1pp per combine for banded gorgets which really shouldnt be started for another 12 skill points or more. It may not sound like a big gap, but it's a lot of failed combines.
If we have to live with this, anyone have any suggestions for cheap combines? I'm at 68 skill and need to jump up to 80-85 to begin banded armor.

Just do banded. If you are successful, you can sell back to a vendor for 1pp+. I spent less than 1k getting my blacksmithing to 115ish.
btw, does anyone want to buy metal bits? I've got a ton since I thought I would be using skewers to level to 100+ skill. I've got about 21 stacks I'm selling for 10pp/stack. Save your wrists!
