Tinkering above 200 - racial/class skill w/another skill above 200

Gnomish Greetings!

I believe that the trade skill system is treating tinkering as a trade skill that cannot exceed 200, if you have another skill above 200. I have made 40 combines at the skill 200 with 255 INT. Where before I was seeing a skill up about once every 10 - 14 attempts, zero since reaching 200.

It costs me about 205p per attempt for the Tinkering. I have spent over 6000p in combine attempts since reaching the cap. I would much appreciate if someone could confirm before I pour money into attempts.

I am pretty certain that the game mechanics are treating Tinkering as a regular trade skill and not a racial trade skill and only allowing 1 TS to get above 200. I already have Jewelcraft at 250 and I have done over 100 advanced tinkering recipes and my tinkering skill is not going past 200.

Q: I thought you were only allowed to go over 200 in one trade skill. Can I go over 200 in Tinkering if I already did with Blacksmithing?

A: According to the notes on the fishing skill at castersrealm, only one global trade skill may exceed the 200 skill cap (a.k.a. "Specialize"). Poison making, Alchemy, and Tinkering are exceptions and can indeed go over 200 even if another trade skill already is.

Trade Skills Enhanced:

Many of the trade skills in game have received massive enhancements, including dozens of new craftable items, new fishing and foraging items, and other things to be discovered once in game.

In addition, trade-skill specialization has been implemented. Players will be able to exceed 200 points of skill in one of the generally available tradeskills. This includes:

Baking
Blacksmithing
Brewing
Jewelcraft
Tailoring
Fletching
Pottery
Once above 200 points in one of these skills, no other skill will be able to exceed 200. Specialization restrictions do not include class or race-specific trade skills such as Alchemy, Make Poison, and Tinkering. Players with race or class-specific trade skills will be able to exceed 200 points of skill in that skill, plus any generally available trade skill.

The enhancement of trade skills is an on-going project. Further enhancements will be made in the coming weeks.

I'm curious though, the wiki tradeskill guide (which could be wrong) lists 175 as the highest trivial combine. What are you combining that exceeds 175? Are you sure your Tinkering is 200?

Doh! Forgot about cultural. Curious then if cultural tinkering recipe is flagged as a general tradeskill on combine when checking for skill ups instead of a racial tradeskill?

Yes, I produce Clockwork Watchman's Armour and Gnomish Vanishing Devices. Until Velious was released with new recipes, there was no way to check to see if it was treated as a regular tradeskill or a class/race tradeskill. I assume by the inability to progress above 200 it is treated [incorrectly] as a regular tradeskill.

I am still doing combines above 200 skill and still have yet to see another skill up nearly 8 months later. Any chance this could be looked at?

I have now done well over 150 combines and still am stuck at skill 200. It has to artificially capped due to my Jewelry skill being over 200. Is it possible please too look at this good sirs?

If it cannot be fixed is it possible to drop my Jewelry skill below 200 so I can advance the tradeskill I want (tinkering)?

Brewing and Make Poison exceed 200. So I would guess that it's something to do specifically with tinkering or you are Norrath's most unlucky gnome.

You can definitely get tinkering and another skill above 200, my gnome currently has Tinkering at 216 and Blacksmithing at 212. I did make sure I got tinkering to 201 before I got blacksmithing to 200 though, maybe that is why it worked for me?

I would be interested to see if Gwideon did another skill first. A 250 JC gnome enchanter cannot exceed 200 tinkering on my end.

Has this fix been implemented yet my friends? I performed a set of 20 combines this week and did not get a skill increase. I know it is not a conclusive sample size, but I didn’t see the update in the patch notes either. Any other tinkerers confirm the fix?

I found an email during my web crawling with a dev quote that solves this mystery. Tinkering above 200 was implemented in mid 2001.

(Also clarifies that racials were excluded from the specialization code.)

A respected member of the tinkering community, Igbert of Rodcet Nife, made
200 skill in tinkering a few days ago. Since then, he has made 80 combines,
and has not yet seen skill 201. Could either of you please verify that it is
possible to go past skill 200 in tinkering? I know that the change to
tradeskills to go above 200 was fairly recent, and it is possible that
tinkering was not included in this update. Also, Igbert has no other
skill above 200 (I know that tinkering should be seperate from the other
tradeskills, but you never know... )

Please write back at your earliest convenience. I'd love to be able to
tell him that it's possible to go above 200... but only if it really is!

Currently the racial oriented are still capped at 200 and are excluded
from the specialization code. I'm going to have the cap on tinkering raised to
250. It will still be excluded from the specialization code so regardless
if another skill is raised above 200 it will still be possible to raise

get in by the patch next week.
