I believe the Gnoll Slayer reward for our server is non-classic.
The original reward should be the 6/28 sword, later adding the 15/40 version along with Bane Damage.
I cant find anything to prove this for links, but the fact all posts are from 2002 on allakhazam show's its nothing classic.

All 2002 or higher posts, after Velious.
Think about it, a 15 damage sword that can be used in off hand in 1999, usable by 6 classes?
And yes, ill expect hate post from people who already done the quest.

I've posted the same as well, but it fell off out of sight. The 15/40 gnoll slayer is not a classic item and instead dates from the Luclin-era revamp of the quest line.

In other situations where there is no 99-01 proof, but enough to show that chances are its not, that item / mob / spell, whatever, was removed or adjusted.
There is more then enough here to show that it is not classic, can we please at least get a dev reply on the situation?

they say there is another part to this quest to add on so the sword gets better stats and also summons a wolf as the effect

This is listed in the database a LORE MAGIC; as you can see from the pic, it is not magical. I can verify this, as I have Gnoll Slayer myself.
Now, if they'd just implement the rest of the quest... <sigh>

This quest and item was upgraded with Luclin.
Its now magic and have Bane DMG to Gnolls.
I have the completed version of the Gnoll Slayer on Eci as of June 14, 2002. I am the first person on Eci with it, not sure about the rest of the servers. The stats are as follows...
Gnoll Slayer
Slot PRIMARY SECONDARY
MAGIC ITEM, LORE ITEM, NODROP
(2) Charges
15 Damage 40 Delay
10 Bane Damage Vs. Gnolls
+25 SV POISON
Effect:Companion Spirit
(also a nice bright light source)
There is evidence that the original version is 6/28.

It's only been 2 days :P
Pending update:
-Removed the additional quest text from Marton.
-Changed uber Gnoll Slayer to the 6/28 Gnoll Slayer with no bane dmg.
Need more evidence before taking away the magic tag.
Good find though, let me know what all needs to happen here.

The text dated back to at least May 2000:
The Gnoll Slayer: Marton Sayor in the cottage in Qeynos Hills is concerned about the safety of his infant son. He says he will give you the gnoll slayer long sword if you help him. Marton mentions a named gnoll named Lord Elgnub who speaks common tongue, and has threatened his family. Well, Lord Elgnub can occasionally be found wandering around blackburrow. He looks like a Splitpaw Gnoll and is approximately level 20. If you kill him you will get a lore/no drop item Baby Joseph Slayer. Take the baby back to his father and the grateful man will give you a Gnoll Slayer sword, which is a 1H slashing, 6/28 lore weapon. Not altogether exciting, but he mentions something about the true potential of the sword. If you inquire further, he mentions there was once an enchantment placed upon a gnolls eye which was embedded in the sword that gave the sword powers to protect against disease and call forth a wolf to fight for you. (Sounds like the scimitar of the Mistwalker). He then says this eye has been stolen, along with the only book that can restore the enchantment and eye to the sword. The thief is a great, one-eyed, white gnoll. I have been told that you need to give him a preserved gnoll eye and a gnoll hide tome along with the sword and he will give you back a better version ot the gnoll slayer (the stats I was given were 9/30, +10 sv disease, and summons a wolf). I haven't confirmed this yet.

It would appear that no one on Allakhazam knew how to complete the quest at the time. But there is no indication that the mobs were not in the game at the time.
Regardless, the initial sword you obtain from the Blackburrow quest is the 6/28 version. However, the upgraded version you quest from Split Paw is what was in question.
Having gone through hours of work camping the named mobs I would like to make sure we have the undeniable proof that these mobs were not in the game after the revamp was made to Split Paw.
My Bard really enjoys having it even if it is pretty slow, but I will live without it if it goes poof, life goes on. :)

You don't need 'proof' that the 15/40 version isn't classic. The 15/40 ratio on a weapon for a dual-wield class is proof enough all on its own. That's far superior to other weapons you could obtain at that level range (which are typically in the 3-4 or so ratio range, see Brazen Brazz kilij, Crystalline Blade, Runed Falchion, etc) and is actually a better ratio than an SSOY. In fact it's nearly equivalent to some planar weapons such as the 15/38 Spirioc Wingblade in Sky (no wonder your bard likes having it, heh).
Additionally, browsing archived versions of EQ equipment sites show absolutely no trace of that weapon prior to Luclin. It was pretty common knowledge that the second step of the quest was broken for a very, very long time. Even the first step for the 6/28 sword periodically broke.
Screenshots of the initial Gnoll Slayer show it as non-magical as late as 2001, here's a 2001-era link: http://web.archive.org/web/20010823110423/eqdb.allakhazam.com/item.html?item=233
Some folks claimed to have found the second version prior to Luclin, but such claims were invariably rumors without evidence.

Just out of curiosity, how many of these things are floating around on the server.
It seems like a whole lot of fuss over some poor bard who spent who knows how many hours completing this quest. I doubt he's going to be tanking dragons on raids because of it.
Now if every level 50 tank was running around with these that would be a different story, but I don't think that's the case.

Lot's of people own them, not exactly tanks but rogues mostly for example I have the final version and so does Stonewall and Shankerton rogues use it to be just a tad bit more viable

I am glad we all came together to make sure this mighty sword is removed. May all the advantages that are not classic be so swiftly fixed

Relevance to this thread? Make a new one, or people won't click on a thread called Gnoll Slayer to answer that question. :)

I suppose you are right it is not relevant cause at least Pots and fine plate were actually in the trilogy, the uber Gnoll Slayer is Luclin.

I spent about 9 hours camping the gnoll in Blackburrow and never saw the Lord gnoll once. I do not have this sword.
Poor baby Joseph Sayer. His sad little life is not even worth a sword that's magical.

Well im not sure on the exact date kunark came out but if you go to the way back machine and select Apr 07, 2000 and go to "The Gnoll Slayer" quest you will see many posts with dates of months and days (not years) If I am right no posts can be after Apr 07, 2000 using this link from the way back machine.
There are posts on there in December and etc. heres the link http://web.archive.org/web/20001205160900/everquest.allakhazam.com/

Thats the initial one you get for just the doll. I am talking about the upgraded one when u turn in the eye and the tome, they later changed that one also to no trade and upped the stats. The one we are looking for here has like 10 disease ressist which someone already posted earlier.

Original version was 6/28 and you could enchant it and it was classic. The enchanted version had the sv dis and the bane dmg to gnolls. It was very rare.
The 15/40 one was not classic at all. So it seems there is an argument over whether the 15/40 was classic or the magic one that was 6/28 was.
6/28 was classic. the text and spawns were in the game from the beginning.
I was someone who lived for hunting and hanging out out doing all low level quests.
