There are a few different mage summoned items here that need to be tweaked actually:

They did improve, but most of them are still pretty worthless. Most of
them just got a few more charges added to them. I.e. Staff of Runes(i
think it was staff of runes) now has 5 charges of Gaze instead of 2.
The non-staves also now have 'magical' properties. Most of them have
pretty insignificant stuff like +5 vs fire, or on the level 34 summoned
dagger +5 vs disease, poison, and magic. None of them have stat
bonuses. The damage/delay stats have all remained the same. The only
one that I think was really that greatly improved was the Sword of
Runes. It now procs Ward Summoned, which isn't bad. If only the rest
could be equivalent. Somehow, a +5 vs fire, and cold for a level 20, or
24 spell doesn't particularly enthuse me.

I propose the following changes based on this evidence:

* Sword of Runes to lose Ward Summoned until October 1999
* Staff of Runes to have 2 charges of Gaze (instead of 5) until October 1999
* Dagger of Symbols to lose its 5 svDisease/svMagic/svPoison until October 1999
* Spear of Warding to lose 5svFire/5svCold until October 1999

Without more specific patch notes it's really hard to say which patch it was. There is also:

September 13, 1999
Some Magician Summoned items are now lore items. Items that have turned lore have had other small benefits added to them.

From that it sounds to me like the magical effects were added in September and then again changed in October, but we don't know exactly what the intermeditate changes were

You are speculating. One of the comments was from BEFORE the September patch and one was around the same day (patch notes were often posted the day before the patch)

There is no ACTUAL evidence as to what summoned item changes happened in September and which happened in October.

What is clear from patch notes is that SOME changes occured on each of those patches, so your recommendations are incomplete at best but also possibly simply wrong.

Only Lore items were adjusted in the September patch.

I found a post describing the Staff of Runes as MAGIC but not LORE, back in June 1999.

Not that I think it needs more evidence but it never hurts.

The Swords of Runes used to proc cancel magic before they change. Quite useful for a solo mage as the pet would debuff your mob so by all means revert this. It was obviously changed to be group friendly.

Are you getting Sword of Runes confused with Staff of Runes? I can't find any evidence that Sword of Runes ever procced anything before October 1999. None of those links I posted has a proc listed for it, including the long list, which includes procs on other weapons.

Direct quote from the long list. Sword of Runes has no effect, and three items down we see effect listed for EBS. There are others.

Got another hit from a mage message board on cor.simplenet.com, regarding the other items that had effects added in the September 1999 patch:


New Summoned Item Properties in Patch

Most intrepid mages out there have probably seen the patch message and already summoned up all there items to check the changes out. Here are two that I found:

Staff of Tracing - Now has spell effect: Flare
Staff of Warding - Now has spell effect: Gaze

These and several other pieces of summoned equipment have also been changed with this patch to be LORE ITEMS. So you cannot keep extras in your bank pouches and be able to summon one while you are off afield on some adventure
** note to self: remove all LORE ITEM Summoned weapons from bank **

If some more seasoned mage can post the new effects of the other weapons effected by the patch, it would be a useful addition to this thread. (i.e., Spear of Warding, Dagger of Symbols, Sword of Runes,Staff of Runes, etc) Thanks.

So it looks like Staff of Tracing, Staff of Warding, and Staff of Runes all got their effects and LORE status in the September patch.

Sword of Runes, Dagger of Symbols, and Spear of Warding would have had their stats and/or effects added in the October patch, since they are not Lore.

They should be gated until those eras.

Additionally, I came across a statement by Abashi that Sword of Runes had stopped proccing from January 2000 until April 2000. This is enough of a time period to warrant mentioning I think and to consider era rules for:

1) Thanks for looking into phantom armor. Would it be possible to change the name to "summoned leather/chain/plate" for role playing sake when you rework it ? (it would be wonderful if it was made conj as well, but I know it won't happen)
We still like the 'Phantom' name. The regenerate component that we are adding to the spells might not fit 'Phantom' too well, but at least it sounds cool.

2) Voice graft, please? It's a RP spell plain and simple and wouldn't affect balance at all.

3) The spear of warding / sword of runes lost there procs sometime in Jan. Was this intentional ? Any plans to be fixed/replaced ?

Talking to one of the item guys about it now. Does it just "not proc", or does it say something like "Item is out of charges" ?

4) At some point there was a silent change in that damage shields cast on pets do not last 3x as long as on people anymore (which hurts your mana efficiency a bit when soloing). I had always thought that the effect was a bug (as damage shields last forever on most mobs), but a silent nerf like this is still a bit disheartening. Was that the case ?

NPCs were treating buff spells differently than PCs. The point was to keep NPCs in cities from constantly casting buffs on everyone and everything. Though this part of the code was maintained, special code was put in so that buffs would wear off of pets at the proper time. We probably should have announced this.

5) GZ once said that summoned items are no-rent because you don't want them to have unlimited effect with a 1 time mana investment, and that if there was some limit on how much say a sword of runes could be used it would be rentable. Then could all consumable summoned items loose the no-rent flag ? Waterstones, ammo, food/water & the ring of flight, come to mind. Pockets, weapons coldstones etc are all fine as no-rent.

We don't have a way to put a time-limit on items, beyond either making them NORENT for the term of a login session, or until you zone, so changing this really isn't an option at this point. It does have the added benefit of requiring that people seek out someone to summon their items every time they log in. Take the dimensional pouch as an example.

6) Could invis to undead be added to the air elementals invisibility spell ?

I'm sorry, but the ability to be invisible to both the living and the dead is and will remain a rogue only ability.

Best solution : "Voice of Zomm" - Allows a mage to directly order his elementals moves for a period of 30 seconds, just like the eye, only works *only* with an elemental. (Yes, that's a long rant about one insignificant spell. Give a mage 3 ways to cast a spell and they start to think it should be useful/fun)

Good point, I'll mention it to GZ. I'm not sure if this would be possible with limited coding however.

8) At what level do focus items begin to affect your elementals ?

We leave things like this to the players to figure out.

9) Was making all the pets delay uniform (after the duel wield patch) intentional or a bug ? Will this be changed ?

When we finally allowed them to start dual wielding, we had to re-evaluate the differing attack speeds. We found them to be too powerful overall. Rest assured that your pets are more powerful than they were before since they dual-wield now.

10) Known bug - Burning out or fire shielding an invisible elemental often results in it becoming *permanently* invis.

This must be a real pain for PvP. I'll send this one to the test team to be sure that it is in the database.

Follow up : We found the problem with the Sword of Runes, and it should be fixed the next time we do data. As for the spear of warding, it doesn't have a proc and never has according to our records.

I killed 30+ elementals in lavastorm with a pet dual wielding sword of
runes. Not one proc. I was disappointed. I had to search to even find a
place to test, so it's not particularly useful even if it did work.

Since the patch I've given many pets (it's been a rough weekend so far) the
swords, mainly for the looks but partially to see if their spell would go
off. I have yet to see the weapons proc in hours on hours of solid
fighting. I won't go so far as to say they won't, but they haven't yet for
me. I am looking forward to fighting something summoned and seeing if they
suddenly start going off.

Pending update:

- Prior to Sep1999, Staffs of Tracing, Symbols, and Warding no longer have effects and are not lore.
- Prior to Oct1999, Sword of Runes, Dagger of Symbols, and Spear of Warding have no combat effects or stat bonuses.
