View Full Version : Game Mechanics: Make Quillmane Classic Again

Currently the Quillmane spawn mechanic on P99 is a custom code that I believe was intended to emulate an unknown spawn mechanic like Quillmane was in the early days. However it has long since been picked apart and is well known by all P99ers:
https://wiki.project1999.com/Quillmane
Quillmane has either a lioness or an elephant calf PHer. When Quillmane spawns he only has 3 fixed spawn locations. This is not correct or classic. The classic behavior is better described here:
My infos are mostly based on this great guide by vmardian but I updated it to 2018 with my own experiences:
https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/npc.html?id=14838#m1244522592305661865
1. Placeholders
There is only one placeholder for Quillmane at the same time. The placeholders that I had seen:
a lioness (after Quillmane got killed, this one does ALWAYS spawn next and does walk to northwest)
a lion
a mist wolf
a shadow wolf
an elephant
an escaped split paw gnoll
aviak avocet
aviak egret
aviak rook
centaur charger
centaur courser
centaur foal
centaur sheltie
These ones may be also placeholders, however the cyclops and the treant are (also) placeholders on the Mroon cycle:
aviak archer
a cyclops
a treant
2. Spawn area
A retangle between the western zone border and the hermit house in the east,
Splitpaw in the north, Aviak village in the south. Mobs only spawn inside these borders.
3. Respawn time
66 seconds (was 78 in the past)
4. Roaming area
After spawning, the mobs wander towards Splitpaw spires but do not always cross them on the first pass. They then do wander northwards but do not cross the undead ruins near the bridge. They pass them eastwards or do stop before them and then tend to walk south up to the aviak village. I have seen placeholders even walk east and west in the northern area but not exactly east and west.
5. Strategy
Make sure that no other players are hunting in the zone as this will disturb the tracking results pretty quickly !
As a druid bind yourself at the center of the retangular spawning area. A tracking skill minimum of 175 is highly recommended as this can cover 95% of the spawn area. As a ranger with a tracking skill above 200 you can hang around southeast of Splitpaw when waiting for the next spawn. Boxing a bard for the Selo song can speed things up. Keep the bard at your bind point or tracking camp. As a ranger you can also let him auto-follow until you found the placeholder for the Quillmane cycle.
The hardest part is to find the placeholder, this can take a few hours. Lions, escaped splitpaw gnolls and "an elephant " are the most common, so start tracking and killing them first and head as fast as you can to the center of the spawn area. A druid tracker with 175 tracking does work much better than a ranger with 300 tracking because of the gate spell. Sort your tracking by "normal" which does show the latest spawns always at the top.
After the first Quillmane spawn and kill its getting easy as you now can be sure that you found the right cycle and the next spawn (a lioness) will be the right placeholder. Be carefull with escaped splitpaw gnolls as they can spawn very close to the Splitpaw spires and the gnolls there (Tesch, Rosch, Nisch) will jump on and kill them very fast.
For more infos read this guide:
https://everquest.allakhazam.com/db/npc.html?id=14838#m1244522592305661865
So in summary Quillmane PHer should spawn 78 seconds after being killed (66 seconds was after the live -20% respawn global change a few years back). The PHer should be anything from that list above. They should spawn on the south half of the zone and roam anywhere. Quillmane similarly should have any number of random spawn locations south of Splitpaw.
Lets rid ourselves of this custom code Quillmane that completely trivializes the camp. And lets get back to classic.

I can work on a new quillmane script, but I'd like to get it right the first time. It is a lot easier to code this properly when working with it than try to make adjustments later.
Any additional evidence/support/theories etc are welcomed.

I spent several hours on eqlive, killing Quillmane PH's. I think I had like 50+ different spawn points.
Here are some logs i had

I encountered this following a roaming gnoll around in paw. Live has a mechanism where mobs can spawn at random points in a given area of the zone. These aren't static spawn points.
Haynar
08-18-2021, 05:36 PM
They were static points, not random, when I was checking. It was just a lot of fixed points, where it would seem random if you didn't capture enough.
I had a lot more logs where I had 3 and 4 spawns at some of the same points, there were like 50+ different potential spawn points.
Lost some of those in computer crash.

Actually nevermind, you're right, I was thinking of pathing nodes for some reason.
On Live they can have a mob wander around the zone to random points and you can chase it for hours trying to figure out the pathing grid. I know because I did it in paw...

Amazing change! This is great. It felt very unclassic to have a group of 4 people 3 camped one at each spawn location just lazily spawning Quillmanes freely.
Having to adventure through the zone to find placeholders and track down Quillmane is going to be very immersive again. Big change for P99.

The upcoming changes to the Quillmane spawn had nothing to do with magicians.
It was on a list of old content I wanted to revisit because its current implementation is wholly 'made up' and incorrect. Furthermore, it was one of the first custom scripts written for p99 almost 10 years ago. This recent bug report and supplementary spawn evidence was inspiring, so I took the time to rewrite it.

This does not disproportionately affect one class.
Far more Pegasus cloaks are clicked every week on this server than are consumed in magician epics. At current drop rates on the Earth Staff, maybe 1 magician epic enters the game every 2 weeks. Whereas basically every raiding level 60 on the server has a Pegasus cloak for levitate.
As nilbog said, the script was made from scratch and is not being changed to reflect the classic implementation. It is also worth mentioning the current iteration that is on P99 now is not the original one that was on P99 at launch, it has been changed before.

As a player it’s an inconvenient change, i really like being able to get a cloak in just an hour of play for each of my toons.
That said, I wish there was a like button for this post because it is so good to see after all these years of hard work on this server you still get jumps of inspiration to make the effort to make things more classic, even if it means rewriting old code you already made from scratch.
For all the complainers saying “well when are you gonna fix this or that” ... well review this thread, see the kind of research you need to do, the level of detail you need to find, and how to present it in order to get Nilbog and co informed and inspired to get to work on this or that problem...
The way I see it, we are all volunteers here after a fashion - whether play testers, researchers, etc.
If you feel like the coding side of things takes too long, maybe message the current coders, and ask for some pointers in how to get started and volunteer to do it yourself?

That has all been done. The evidence is there in levels of detail much more than have been presented and prompted other changes that have already happened. The changes and fixes for ST would be much easier and take a fraction of the time spent on this change that approximately 4 people care about.

A valid concern, and in my opinion Quillmane shouldn't have a placeholder at all. Why is a legendary pegasus tied to some random lion cub or aviak? Just put it on a fixed respawn at a random point in the zone.
Also, make the cloak only work for casters. The absurd amount of clickies available to players is not classic, people didn't know about a lot of these items back then, especially this one. Melee shouldn't be able to float around freely. They should need a caster to levitate them, damn it.

No one is completing the mage epic anyways. This will affect almost no mages at all. If you want to be indignant about something go research earth staff drop rates and see if you find the evidence to get those changed. Because that is what affects mage epic here, not the Peggy cloak.

You must not have with comments like that.
Most people didn't know the Quillmane cloak existed before it became known as a needed item for the Mage epic, and definitely almost nobody knew the exact spawn mechanics (which were different, more difficult, than what has been on P99).
Lots of other clickies that people have taken for granted on P99 were similarly rare, as the playerbase either didn't know about them or were too busy trying to level or do other content.

No, they didn't. There were even 100+ people in South Karana during pre-Kunark, and Quillmane cloaks still were very rare back then, since people didn't know how to make it spawn and weren't really trying. Most people never saw Quillmane at all, and of the random people who might have spotted the NPC while they were trying to level up, it's not like they all knew it dropped the cloak. It was rare enough to be considered only a rumor for awhile.

That's not super relevant. You can't code people's ignorance from 20 years ago into the game. I mean you could unclassicly by making it extremely rare spawn but people would still figure out the mechanics, it would just gate the amount of Cloaks that dropped artificially.
So lets not only make what is already a rare drop, from a cycle that can be short or long. If done as a team takes 4 people or more as groups and guilds like to help each other. Lets make that more difficult to track and kill. Who wants to kill a cycle that has so many place holders and so many spawn points that you can't even keep track of it. Classic now on live is not classic. Knowing about this and other items then does not effect that now... 20 years later we do know about these items. Its called learning through testing, and passing that information on. Every step forward seems to be 10 steps back on this server now. Especially when we are how many years in with this current mechanic?

That's the whole reason why people play here and not there.
If you want an unclassicaly easy game ... play on live. If you want the game of classic EQ, in all it's difficult glory (even though sometimes that glory takes 10+ years to arrive) ... play here.

I'd just like to add that this thread and the dev responses are encouraging. P99 is overdue for a "refresh" on a lot of things like this that are trivializing the game. I want to play P99 again but it has become too static in a lot of ways. I believe the staff feeling was that nothing should be done that isn't provably classic but we all know this is leaving a lot of stuff in game that we know isn't classic. It just can't be proven how it was in classic so it is left in a broken or trivial state. Please do nerf the shit out of these things and bring some classic mystery and difficulty back to the game.

It's fine that after 20 years we have figured out precise spawning protocols for these guys but they weren't supposed to be like that, where you gotta pay sherpa fees for your karana quillmane looting adventure.
On live I leveled in karana and so did a lot of other people, and one of the rewards for slaying wild beasts was eventually you found quillmane and get a runed oak bow, thunderhoof quiver, or his cloak all of which are excellent items.
All I'm saying is it isn't anyones "right" to have mastered the spawning mechanics of these kind of mobs. It isn't classic at all.
It would be classic to change the mechanic entirely after a year or two which would allow entrepreneurial people time enough to develop a technique to get him to spawn quicker, or whatever.

This is not for you to decide. Your opinion on what is classic is irrelevant. You cannot achieve a "classic" feel for a game where everyone knows how the game works and has 20 years experience with it. You can't gatekeep that. It's impossible to put the toothpaste back in the tube. You can only make sure it has accurate classic mechanics and let people experience it how they will.
Every single change made on these servers with the point of making a more "classic feel" is trash. It's impossible to replicate how Everquest felt to us and our experiences with it from back in era. It's just not possible without completely diluting and ruining how the game functions. We've already seen these servers ruined in innumerable ways because the devs try to gatekeep how we're supposed to experience certain content and it ends up with 5 people happy and the other 99.999999% of the player base rightfully upset that the game no longer functions as it did in era.

?? Who ever said it was for me to decide lol, I'm just a forum poster talking about how I think things should be. What changes are you referring to that have been trash?
I can remember a few downgrades that I have not enjoyed.
1. Spell lists. I just started using spell lists for the first time in my life the day before they nerfed them here
2. Compass. It's just easier seeing a compass rather than having a hotkey for sense heading.
3. Racial hide. Used to function like rogue hide so was hide vs all including undead, but nerfed to classic hide vs living only
4. Night blindness. This one is not a nerf but a retro change that sucks because its trying to force something that isn't there anymore and the experience is not classic enough to be good. This is a point that I would totally agree on being "for classic feels" but being kinda fucked up.
Regarding 99.99999 percent being unhappy, thats definitely not true.
5 percent love it and care, 5 percent hate it and care, the other 90 percent don't really care and still enjoy the game. You and I and probably a lot of the people on the messageboards are probably the whiney types in the 5 percent on either side of any change.

It's anecdotal evidence from various people in all the top guilds that have been farming for cloaks since the change. It's nearly impossible to get Q to spawn let alone to get a cloak drop.
Also that's hilarious that you think devs will just fix something given evidence. There are plenty of active threads in the bug forum that suggest otherwise.

Perhaps the way in which QM spawns is more "Classic" but the drop rate of the cloak is NOT classic. Even dating back on Allakhazam:

don't be disapointed if you get the leggings man, 5 times out of 10 he drops them instead of the cloak
Dating back to 2001 even cloak on Live dropped 50% of the time... What they did was drop the rate when it was "easier" to camp before to outweigh people getting them so easily.. but now that they changed the way in which it spawns, they didn't change the drop rate to be better reflective of true classic.. It's now impossible to get vs what it actually was on Live.

I posted this years ago on these forums but just wanted to reaffirm this thread.
This is the info you need to know
Quillmanes spawning script is a bit different on P99 than it was from classic live.
How I remember it
Quillmane had it's own spawn cycle of 78 seconds, and was one of the few cycles in the zone to run on that specific timer. (another being the crack tusk cycle). All other mobs use either a 38 second or the longer zone timer.
Quillmanes cycle placeholders had what seemed like (approx) 20+ random spawn locations only in the southern half of the zone. After the Placeholder (or quillmane) spawned, it could roam to the northern area of the zone most memorably taking a northern path through split paw.
Cycle Spawn %
a lion - 16
a lioness - 12
an escaped Splitpaw gnoll - 12
an elephant - 9
a shadow wolf - 6
centaur sheltie - 3
a mist wolf - 3
aviak avocet - 2
centaur archer - 2
aviak darter - 1
aviak harrier - 1
aviak rook - 1
centaur courser - 1
a cyclops - 1
Quillmane - 7
As you can see, I only got the one kind of elephant. While that isn't PROOF that the other kinds of elephant aren't on his spawn cycle, I don't believe that they are. Regular cyclops ARE a ph.
And I 100% GUARANTEE YOU that Quillmane and his placeholders can spawn at more than 30+ locations. The most EXTREME spawns I found were:
as far west as: (3224, -4450)
as far east as: (-2554, -3780)
as far south as: (1865, -6417)
as far north as: (2779, -3575)

Memories don't count if they aren't backed up by evidence, and none of what you posted is evidence no matter how much you guarantee. You are correct about one thing though, none of that is proof.

The new Quillmane code is absolutely able to cracked like the previous one. It's not as easy, but it's not that much harder. Whereas 1 bard was fine before, I'd suggest 2 bards now.
I used to sell Quillmane cloaks back around 2015 (Here (https://www.project1999.com/forums/showthread.php?t=188365) is one thread) and it was silly. 2 triggers with about five spawn routes each was low effort, to put it mildly.
Spoiler alert - the key to finding the new triggers lies in the spawn time. Use this to locate one, then follow it's route, remembering an NPC can spawn at any point of it's route. Once you've located one trigger, you can now use track order to find the next. Bard + Ranger is ideal for this. Find it, Highsun, follow it, repeat.
It takes patience, but it's not that hard. AoEing the entire zone is just going to take longer.

I would be incredibly surprised if you have just happened to crack the new formula when the rest of the server is basically still in the dark. In just the last week some of my guildies have gone to SK with almost a full group and farmed for about 6 hours. They got 3 Q spawns, no cloak. Yesterday a different person went alone and farmed for 7 hours, I forget if it was on a bard or ranger, and saw a single spawn, obviously no cloak.
Like most things on this server this is now completely overtuned to the point where for the average player it's not even worth going to SK and trying to spawn Q.

I spawned him about five times last week, then stopped, confident I had found enough triggers. It wasn't mass AoE, it was killing one mob, then Quillmane spawning.
The server was in the dark for a long time on the old code too. The problem with mass AoE is, sure, he'll spawn every once in awhile, but you won't really know why. It's best to be more.. precise about it. Go when the zone is near empty. Preferably a bard and ranger so you can cover the zone quickly, and use bard charm to pet track.
I agree with Eisley after messing around with this myself over multiple sessions, both as a solo bard and with a ranger duo. If you take the time to research all the posts linked here and elsewhere on the internet about the old QM spawns it looks like they wrote it similar to how people have described it in the past on live. Rng+bard does seem to be the ideal combo now. It can be very time consuming to find the right spawn, but it's doable. They also don't appear to have changed the drop rate. I think my personal record for consecutive leg drops before the nerf was 16 or 17 in a row, but you could spawn him quickly so it wasn't so bad.

So basically it should be even easier to spawn QM now if Nilbog truly made it classic. Coming straight from the original dev who wrote that code back in the day.
https://youtu.be/sRLeVEuuLXM?t=1193
Should be a % chance off a single ph that has a whole list of possible low level mobs to spawn. Can't get any better proof than this.

I'll watch that video when I can, but essentially yes. It seems like it's a single spawn on a shortened timer (as Eisley mentioned) that can spawn several different placeholders, but it has a huge path on which it can spawn so finding it is much more difficult than the previous mechanic and why that 2nd person is super helpful. I went through all the links and data in this thread and found some supplementary posts on the web that led me down that path and I've had some success with this approach since the change.

Yep. Precisely.
My suggestion is that once you spawn a Quillmane, have the Ranger get the next spawning mob and go to it, Highsun and follow it for a half hour. Use Zilz and /loc and map it's path out in MSpaint.
Kill it. Next spawn, do it again. Repeat this a few times, killing it immediately when you get a known spawn route. When QM pops on its' death, you can confirm that map and move on.
It took a lot more work to get it sorted, but at this point, I consider it no harder to farm than before. I got 3 in a few hours the other day.

I am going to have to disagree with this entirely. It is MUCH harder due to the fact that the PHs can seem to to be almost anywhere, with a much wider variety of types of spawns. It also now requires more people. You now need at least 2 max track rangers to split the zone in half. We have tried everything suggested here. We got one single quillmane spawn when we first showed up to try and figure this out. It spawned within 5 minutes of killing PH's in the south half of the zone. Since that first spawn we have spent over 12 hours trying to get a quillmane spawn with not a single spawn. Every time we thought we had it figured out and narrowed down to the single 78 seconds respawn, after a few kills like this, the next spawn (or quillmane) didn't show up 78 seconds later and we seemingly lost all progress. We have tried mass AoE'ing, we have tried literally everything, multiple bards, you name it. This was much easier to do before and literally could have done solo by any pet class with pet track or a single max track ranger.
If anybody has any more info other than vague info like find the place holder then just hit track 78 seconds later, please do share. Because it is most definitely not that simple seeing as how a max track ranger cannot see the whole zone. You would need multiple spread out to cover everything. Screenshots of GINA maps with routes and spawn points, % chance of different PHs, would be a tremendous help if anybody has started to map any of this out and has it saved.
We are super frustrated trying to figure this out because as people have said, it shouldnt be too much harder than before but I find it very highly unlikely we were just on so bad of a RNG streak that we didnt pop a quillmane for 12 hours.
There also seems to be conflicting info on what the "classic spawn mechanics" were like. I see several claims that the PH could only spawn in the souther section of the zone between the west wall, KFC, Hermit, and Splitpaw. But I am quite certain PHs are spawning north of splitpaw maybe even as north as the NK bridge/Centaur village area and that directly contradicts alot of the info I have read in here.

I did finally manage to narrow down the PH and spawn Quillmane a few times today and got a cloak. The biggest issue with Quillmane hunting isn't that the PH can be any type of mob anywhere in the zone. The real problem I encountered and was able to figure out was that there are several other named cycles with the same type of PHs on the same 78 second timer. This includes Groi Gutblade, Synger Foxfyre, Gnawfang, High Shamans Grisok/Phido, Ren'rex and potentially Grizzleknot aswell. Groi and Synger always have a lion PH that spawns in the southern half of the zone. High Shamans have escaped splitpaw gnolls and possibly also lioness/mist wolf/shadow wolf? couldn't confirm that as I had Phido spawn relatively early and left him after that.
First thing we did when we got to the zone was pull and AOE down basically everything in the zone that wasn't a static or obvious non-PH. I had to keep killing 78 second respawns until all those named were up and leave them, eliminating those respawns as potential Quillmane PHs. This is difficult on green especially as theres still usually about a dozen lowbies in zone killing around KFC, Splitpaw, etc. Groi also dies to Aviaks and then you have new lions spawning again which is a PITA. If the zone is empty what you can do after your AOE pull is then pull the gnolls around splitpaw and AOE them down so they respawn after all the other trash in the zone, putting them at the top of the Track list. Reshuffling your ranger's track list is the key to finding quillmane.
Once you have AoE'd down the zone, all the 78 second timers will respawn first. Have your ranger run in a big circle around splitpaw hitting track and going and grabbing everything that respawn after 78 seconds but before the 6 minute respawns are spawning. You will find about 4-6ish of these spawns. Only one is the Quillmane PH. Hold those spawns and do not kill them till the entire zone is respawned. Then have your buddies (hopefully you aren't attempting this solo) pull all the gnolls around splitpaw and AOE those down. Once those respawn, then kill your pack of 78 second respawn timer mobs. Your track list is now properly sorted. As long as you don't leave the zone or relog the newer spawns will always be on top of the list just above the splitpaw gnolls. You will slowly filter out the other named cycles as eventually groi, synger foxfyre, etc all spawn. Leave them up. Eventually you will narrow it down to the quillmane PH.
Its not all over here though. The Quillmane PH can spawn seemingly anywhere in the zone and even max track ranger will not always see it immediately when it spawns. However, the quillmane PH does always eventually roam through the middle area of the map at some point not long after spawning, and if you keep running your wide circle around splitpaw when that spawn enters your track range it will be on top. It took me about 5 hours from zoning in, figuring this all out and spawning QM. She dropped cloak first kill and then legs both times after that.
The other thing I think was happening is that the "PHs" are still triggers, meaning QM will spawn immediately upon death of a trigger, and the PHs respawn timer will keep running even once QM is spawned. So even once QM is spawned you still need to keep your timer running from the last kill and the PH may be up again before QM is even dead (This is unconfirmed but 2 of the times I saw Quillmane I found her on track within 5 seconds of killing a "PH", and after the first kill lost track of the PH since I started a timer upon her death but couldn't find the PH respawn on track for over 5 minutes after she died, as I think it had already respawned before she died and I missed it.)

Nilbog I hope you're reading this and see how absolutely absurd and non-classic you've made this mob for "reasons". Would be nice if players had the ability to just pull the trigger on non-classic changes to the server for no reason at all like various devs have done.

Finally, a thinking man and not just a complainer!
One solution to the Track missing QM issue - use Bard charm and /pet attack Quillmane after killing the triggers.
Aside from that, while your method is a bit different than mine, I'd call it more elegant and reliable. Well done.

The drop rate of the cloak vs the leggings was slightly off. I mean, it wasn't off by much, but likely exacerbated the issue of overall rarity when combined with fewer kills.
That part has been reevaluated and the change will be in the next update.
As far as the spawning method, I do not see anything wrong with it, and aligns with the 'evidence', anecdotal evidence, as well as what the former developer said in the linked video.
I also reviewed how many Quillmane kills occur on the servers on a daily basis; there are many. The amount of cloaks on the other hand, I agree needed adjustment to get to a better place.
So, the loot table should function better after next patch.

Any chance you could as least clarify which version of the classic spawning method you are using? There seems to be several different version or accounts of classic quillmane spawning methods. However, most of the classic information on Quillmane spawning suggests the placeholders can only spawn south of splitpaw on fixed points (albeit many), but it appears post-change on p99 at least that placeholders can spawn on any point on their roaming paths, including far north in the zone, which evidence (and most of the posts in this thread) suggests should not be happening.

Peak Quillmane sales days for me was during the huge demand right before Velious. I'd find 2 buyers and park them at Hermit and Centaur, and Bards can track W themselves - or, worst case, charm and pet track to make sure it didn't sneak away.
Essentially a guaranteed 30k within an hour.
Selling them now is pretty profitable too, but I've only sold a few. I wish I saw more people trying to solve it instead.

It's literally explained down to the minutae in this thread, the first post on page 9.
There are 6 pathing mobs with 78 second respawns. Every other pathing mob is 6 minute respawn.
The 78 second respawning roaming mobs are placeholders for various named, one of which is Quillmane.

Since this seems to be the de facto Quillmane thread for now, I thought I'd add my own experiences.
Just finished a 3 hour stint of camping QM on Aystar, my 35 ranger. So 180 track, not quite maxed, but I was impatient and the hell level was boring me.
To start, I rounded up every PH I could reasonably take. At 35 I couldn't take several avocets/cyclopes etc. so mostly lions/lionesses/elephants/escaped gnolls/wolves/etc. then got them to the center of "The Triangle" (KFC/Hermit/Spires). I then worked my way through them with a GINA timer for 78s. Took note of my track list before the first timer expired, then waited for all timers to finish expiring, and swept the southern half of the zone for any mobs above that timer, making sure to be mindful of the 6 minute zonewide repop timer.
Note: It may help to take the highest mob on your track before repops, find it, and drag it around with you as you collect new mobs. This way, you have a point of reference with you constantly and you never "lose your place". Groi Gutblade or his PH lion are a good mob to do this with, as you can nab extra Rings of Shadow to sell AND they have the same repop time as Quillmane so you can go get them again for the next round.
Anyways, rinsed and repeated that a few times until I had just one mob that was respawning as a new thing every 78s. That's Quillmane PH. The list posted earlier seemed accurate to me, I saw the following mobs:
Quillmane
a shadow wolf
a treant
an escaped splitpaw gnoll
a lion
a lioness
a mist wolf
aviak harrier
a cyclops
an elephant
centaur sheltie
I Can't confirm if Avocets, Centaur Archers, Centaur Coursers, or Rooks were PH's, as I didn't run into any on this cycle. Also positive at this point that elephant calves and bull elephants are NOT on this cycle.
The only thing I experienced differently than previously stated was that Quillmane never once spawned instantly upon death of his placeholder. She would always spawn 78 seconds after the PH was killed, and then once she was killed, the next pop would be 78 seconds later.
Some other things to add-
If you're attempting this solo, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're a 39+ Ranger or a bard. Run speed can kinda make up for tracking difference, but there were several times I'd have to search for spawns outside my tracking range if standing in the center of the Triangle. They popped as far east as past the Hermit Hut and as far west as over the hill by KFC. I'd say they popped as far south as the south zone wall and as far north as Paw. So that's a lot of distance to cover. If the zone is fairly empty or there's no competition, start at one side and sweep to the other. If there's competition, start in the center to increase your chances of catching it before someone else does.
And another note--- PLEASE ask in zone if somebody's camping Quillmane before you start a big swarm pull. If someone is, there's a chance that you're just going to make it harder for them AND yourself by littering the track list with trash. I had a bard run through and swarm the whole zone and mess everything up and I then had a lot of guesswork and competition on my hands, when it would have been faster, even for the bard, if they asked and got second on the list but while actually knowing the PH from the get-go.
EDIT: Wanted to add a note about the drop rate. I've killed 9 Quillmanes thus far and have yet to get a cloak. RNG gonna RNG of course, but wondering if that promised increase to the drop rate was implemented yet or not.
