I would like to advocate for my fellow necromancers regarding the Ivandry's Hoop / Life Tap issue. Especially now, since we're now seeing our root rot damage adjusted (Thank you!)
Over 10 years ago, Ivandry's Hoop and it's usage was nerfed in several ways, but the most direct of which was that across the board, Life Taps as a class of spells became resistable. This is not classic, but it was done specifically because to quote the Wiki "due to imbalance with raid mobs".
I would like to argue in 2024, with server populations looking and feeling as they are, that this change is no longer necessary and should be reversed.
The purpose of adjusting Ivandry's Hoop was to combat imbalance with raid mobs, however if this was the purpose of nerfing the hoop, then the time for it has completely passed. In 2024, there are an abundance of characters that are quite literally armed to the teeth with every wizbang raid item one can obtain. Raid mobs once properly engaged by an experienced raiding guild rarely last longer than minutes. Competition for these mobs are in the realm of FTE rules of engagement and how many characters your guild can prepark at a raceline, than the provence of a clickable earring.
In fact, I would argue that giving access to these spells as intended would help smaller guilds with fewer resources contend for targets, as they would be the ones to rely on the types of strategies what would warrent their use.
The difficulty of obtaining and maintaining the Hoop in and of itself more than accounts for whatever advantage they may provide and this alone could still be used for the purpose of balancing, if by some stretch of the imagination this singular item still upsets the balance of the raiding world. A long cast time could be introduced. Race and Class restrictions could be applied. These alone would directly impact how usable it is.
Nerfing an item in order to keep the game balanced and fair is expected. Adjusting an entire spell line to combat an issue with just a single item is quite simply an overreach and unfair. To be specific, to two whole classes, who were themed and designed around this very concept, it is unfair specifically to them.
If we can adjust root rotting damage to grant full damage in order to be in line with classic, I cannot find a good reason why this clear and obvious overreach affecting Life Taps cannot be reconsidered.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
