Recipes for new brewing tempers were released in June 2002 as seen here (https://web.archive.org/web/20020611180904/http://www.eqtraders.com/secrets/recipes_temper.htm).
One of the the new tempers listed is the fiery temper, requiring essence of fire, flame agates, and imp blood. These ingredients were also introduced at this time.

Re: Easy place to find Essence of Darkness
flame agates now dropping off the Ice giants in everfrost - this suggests that they are a random occurance on the "medium" gem table now.

It appears Essence of Fire has already been removed:
