There is something wrong here, because I used to cast an eye and tap it as a Necromancer in Velious... pretty sure WHILE I had a pet. So at some point in Velious, this had been reversed. Velious was released in December of 2000 I believe. It was in Velious that I got Holgresh Elder Beads and was then able to cast an eye.

Perhaps this was reversed in a January 2002 patch when eyes became more like familiars and less like pets.

This is already Luclin time frame though.

Then again, in a April 2002 patch:

"A character may now have a horse, a pet and an Eye of Zomm at the same time."

Of course this could have been referring to the addition of a horse to a possibly already allowable pet with Eye of Zomm.

I'm almost positive Lazortag is correct. mwatt is correct in that it changed in 2002.

For necs: eye of zomm gives an unlimited source of hp/mana. Lich, BoD an eye now and then and the very efficient mana regen cycle is not dependent on speed of pulls or the resistance of the mobs. (Many velious mobs are immunte to magic and cannot be tapped) The utility of eye of zomm in many cases outweighs the usefulness of the nec's pet.
