View Full Version : Miscellaneous: Newbie drops - selling for (much) more than classic?

So I got a friend of mine to start up on P1999, and he pointed out that a lot of the lowest level trash mobs drop stuff that sells for several gold here.
Now that he mentions it, I notice the same thing... <EDIT - bat fur is a bad example - venom sacs, some rusty weapons, etc., sell for several gold> Lots of other stuff like this. You can have 100pp from selling your yard trash drops by the time you are level 10.
Memory is a funny thing, but I do know that this was not the case back in the 99-01 timeframe. I know a few plat was a huge deal at the time. I can have a few plat by the time I'm level 2 or 3 now - without leaving sight of the guards.
I don't have any proof of this or documentation, but maybe it's out there somewhere. Can anybody else back this up? Devs - can we just nerf the drops (or more likely, the vendor pricing of the drops)?

I seem to remember bat fur being one of those 5s 5c items or something.

We can easily change the pricing of anything. Just post a link or reference what it should be.

According to Alakazam it should sell for 1s 5c. That sounds about right:

I also believe that noob item prices are too high, i remember 3pp being a lot of money at lvl 5 :p if i'd scraped together 10pp for that illustrious RTS by the time i was level 10 i was happy.

A quick list of everything my level 3 enchanter has in his bags right now.
115 CHA, Kindly Considers
Bat Fur, 1s 5c (I want your 5g Bat Furs ^.~)
Ruined Wolf Pelt (No Stack), 1s
Black Wolf Skin (No Stack), 1g 9c (rarer drop, first one I've seen out of 30 or so wolves)
Crushbone Belt, 4s
Chunk of Meat, 1s 4c
Wasp Wing, 1s
Wolf Meat, 1s
Bat Wing, 1s
Tiny Dagger, 1s (chanter bought item)
Small Box (No Stack), 1g 9s (Bought them for 2g 1c)
Cloth Gloves (No Stack), 2g 5s 7c
Small Cloth Sleeves (No Stack), 2g 1s 7c
Giant Wasp Venom Sac (No Stack), 3g 9s
That one may be a little on the high end, but I can't say for certain. I was a Qeynos player back in classic for just about every character. And from playing Hiragawa there for five levels, the prices seem about right.
The only things I've noticed that feel far too high are the weapons. A few of the rusty weapons go for a silver or two, and then some go for 5 gold o.o
And I'm not sure when the price change went in that kicked the Cracked Staff and the like up to 1p+, so I can't say if that was the right price for classic or not.
Marked (No Stack) items since they usually sell at a higher price then stackables.

Cracked staff was always 1pp - at least from Kunark onward - I remember seeing it and going "my god, jackpot!"

Yeah, that's what I mean Kainzo. It's been so long, I'm not sure if it was 1p in vanilla or added in Kun/Vel

Giant Wasp Venom Sac, 3g 9s
Venom sacs, (and poison sacs from like snakes etc) are considered rarer and actually worth that little extra. Dunno where you're finding 5g bat furs, to the other dude...

Yeah Ast, I remember the ones from Snakes and such in Qeynos selling rather well when you finally got to the Giant Snakes in Blackburrow and what not. Didn't know if that was intended for right outside the gates in Fay though ^.^
Phew, now I don't feel guilty about knowing I can afford some level 4 spells :P

Just as a comparison, as a (non-twink) 10 wizard I'm struggling to buy most spells each tier...and forget about non-drop equipment upgrades.

cracked staff was always the $$ of drops, because you'd kill a skelly with one and be "NooooOoooo" when it turned out to be a worn great staff.
Some rusties (broadsword etc) were trashy and sold for much less than the others. 2 handers, long swords all sold for a gp each.

That's what I'm seeing: broad swords, short swords, and maces sell for a few silver, other rusties sell of 1 or 2 gold. They may not be 100% exact on price, but I haven't seen anything glaringly out of whack.

Yeah, I thought as much, but like I said, it's been nearly 11 years, I wasn't positive and didn't want to come out and say it. ^.^
Then yeah, prices are spot on. It's like Agecroft said, for casters most of our cash is going towards spells, and we're having a hard time just like back in the day. If people think it's easier to get plat.. or faster... it's probably because unlike in vanilla, they know what to go after.
Cracked Staves, Poison Glands, Rusty 2handers. Not to mention being out in the field and knowing to ditch your ruined wolf pelt for a cracked staff.
And I still wanna know where you're getting the 5g bat furs. I'd have 20 plat by now with those!

Yeah, like I mentioned I don't have any real proof. I misstated the bat fur example - sorry about that.
Sadly it would be hard to get proof since it's just kind of an across the board - "I'm way richer off of yard trash than I ever was in 1999".
Maybe it's that the venom sacs and similar stuff are dropping much more often now. I guess we may never know. :/

Well of course you're richer off yard trash then in '99. Like I said, you know what to loot now better then you did back then. And for the Poison sacs etc... You have to remember there were a lot more players in the newbie yards back then. I can go from wasp to wasp right now getting sacs and get some nice coin, but back in '99 I imagine everyone thought that way, so you'd naturally have less because you'd be more spread out on how often you kill them.
^.^ I'm sure everyone remembers back then going 'Ugh... another three stacks of rat whiskers. Why can't I snag a skeleton to kill!'

Maybe. But my style of killing yard trash now is identical to what it was then. I (try to) kill anything that moves that is yellow or lower. I am not selective about it. I loot virtually everything and I sell virtually everything.
Back then I would have to scrape and save for certain spells and maybe a backpack or two. Now I can buy all my spells, fill up with backpacks (me and the bank), and buy random vendor armor. And still be piling up the savings.
I'm not saying anything necessarily can or needs to be done about this, since I don't know that we can quantify it.
Just responding to your point - that I'm pretty certain this is not merely perception or due to anything I am doing differently now.

You're not doing anything different no... but there also aren't 75 other players in your 'il newbie area. It's only natural that chance can favour you and let you pick up many more Poison Sacs/Weapons/Armour Drops etc with less people in the yard.
Less People, more mobs up at any given time. More mobs up, better chance that mobs up can be Wasps, Skeletons, Gnolls etc that are free to kill.

i can confirm the cracked staff sold for 1pp in classic. I clearly remember farming skellies for them in toxx forest on my first ever wizard in 99.

Yes, newbie item prices seem 100% spot on to me. Some rusty weapons (broadsword, mace, short sword) are worth a few silver, others (longsword, scim, etc) are worth 2g+, cracked staff is 1pp.
Everything is right in the world.

Don't you guys dare screw me over on my "loot 12,000 cracked staffs to buy a FBSS" scheme!!!
